Looks like those guys have a blue translucent marbled trackball.  It looks pretty damn cool to me!  I don't think I would spring an extra $30 for it, but I'm sure some people would.

The 8-ball trackball is probably a 2 1/4" trackball - they happen to be the same size as a billard ball. So any standard billard ball can be dropped in a 2 1/4" trackball. I have a translucent sparkle cue ball as my trackball - see: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=58850.msg580646#msg580646

Also one alternative for 3" trackballs are acrylic juggling balls - see:

Is there a single basketball game, ever, that would use trackball? Your probably going to have to find some other item that happens to be 3" round (or whatever your trackball size is) and try to make it work.

Perhaps you can find an actual mini-basket ball that size and fill it with something heaver than air...??? (really stretching there).

If you were a good painter, you may be able to paint a white/clear one? Or if they have an orange one, you could just paint the black "basketball stripes"? ... although finding a paint that won't rub off will be tough ...

I doubt paint would work, when you consider that a standard trackball can actually grind down the metal roller over time. I doubt there is any paint that can have a better chance than steel.

Ginsu, Nice catch! I'm a little young for that  ;D

RayB, ya I figured that was probably the case ... perhaps you could etch out the black lines, and fill in with black JB weld? (HA!  :laugh2:)
