Any chance of a BYOAC iPhone App?
« on: July 21, 2010, 10:20:47 am »
Something basic - forums only would be awesome if they were easy to read, navigate and post on.  Is this a tough thing to make happen?  Any thoughts?

I thought iPhones were meant to be really good for web browsing? (I don't have one)

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

I never understand this need for website "apps". Although the current mobile theme for the forum is indeed a bit lacking.

Maybe you could use an existing SMF app though? Like SMF iPhone App or maybe the SMF 4 iPhone theme would be an option (SMF 2 though).

I think I'll try out ForumKast (SMF iPhone App) since it's free.

I made a post using ForumKast and it didn't show up. Also, it didn't show avatars and there was an advertisement forced on me after the post. Removing it now.

I'd wait until we move to the 2.x version of the forum. Not doing so until it goes out of beta.

They are really good. I carry my iTouch in addition to my WM phone because the browsing is so much better.

Sites that are formatted for the iTouch/iPhone (using Dashcode) are simply amazing.  Very easy to navigate.

I do find this site more difficult (but not impossible) to navigate on my iTouch than most.

I'm posting this using the opera app.

Not bad, but you do need to slide around a bit.

Mobile theme? How do I get that?

Browsing this forum using Safari on my Ipod touch works perfectly fine. It's amazing how I can easily hit the little "new" icon next to threads and not click something adjacent. The screen is incredibly precise. No need for an app.

*BUT* if you want to directly launch the site, I believe you can set a bookmark to appear as an icon in the apps pages. This feature is new with OS 4.0
NO MORE!!

It needs to be installed on the site and then you could pick it from your profile. As saint said though, the theme is for the new version of the form and that's still in beta.

Yeah, it works perfect on my Windows Mobile too. Which is why I never understand the need for "apps" for websites.

There are themes for SMF that work great on mobile browsers.  I use to run a forum with SMF and it worked great on my black berry.

With the exception of complex sites (e.g. ebay) if an app for a website is needed it just means the website is badly designed IMHO. They should be designed to be device independant wherever possible.

Must be my phone (HTC Touch Pro).  I'm forever clicking on the wrong thread which is very frustrating.  My iTouch is fine with this site-- especially if I browse landscape.   I don't need an app but formatting for mobile devices would be nice.

Works great on my Blackberry Storm v2 also - no need for a separate app to browse the web...

Hey how come no suggestion for an Android App?   ???

Actually, a few of my apps on my Droid (IMDB, Facebook, eBay) are simplified versions of the respective website with consolidated features for quick access.  I wouldn't mind seeing a BYOAC app, but the browser works just fine.
