Rebuild a joystick is it worth it? if yes how to?
« on: July 18, 2010, 06:44:49 pm »
As you know I have been working on my MVC and someone along the line tried to "fix" the sticks one has a zip tie under the block above the e clip and the the other I havent pinned it down yet but moving to the right is a issue.

They look to be generic bat tops but not sure how to tell 100%.

So what is the consensus?

It'll probably be less of a headache and better in the long run to just replace them with new ones.

Unless they are really hard to find, it seems like replacing would be easier.  Based on the difficulty I've had finding parts for my joysticks, I'd say it would also be cheaper that way.

If they are just Happ sticks, replace them. You can find them for less than $10 each. I think that is what is in the MVS cabs. I need to replace mine, and I think they are the comp sticks, but I haven't looked too close yet.

+1 for replacing. You will probably find a stick that suits your gaming style easily enough, and most are simply 4 switches with quick-connects so if you're a novice, no fiddly wiring or soldering is needed.

Thanks for all the info and suggestions!

Divemaster I might get a couple of those from you its a toss up I kinda like the idea of the bats to keep it looking the same but I have a lead on some inexpensive seimitsu joysticks.

Anyone have a opinion on a seimitsu vs. ?

Thanks again for the input!

What is the difference between these and the HAPP Competition joysticks?  I have Competitions and looking at these there is no difference by looking.  What makes these worth $2 more?

some people like the cherry switch better than the eswitch that happ uses now but tests have been run & really apples vs oranges...I am selling 500+ sticks a month & have no returns or issues at all

So, if that's the case... I got my Comps when HAPP was still using Cherry switches.  So all mine have Cherry switches as well as my backup reserve of about 50 switches are all Cherry.  The only difference would be the matching dust washers?

What is the difference between these and the HAPP Competition joysticks?  I have Competitions and looking at these there is no difference by looking.  What makes these worth $2 more?

Well they both pretty much play the same and I guess if you didn't have the two side by side to compare you wouldn't really notice the difference.  On my showcase build I have HAPP for P1 and P4 and iL on P3 and P4 and you can hear the difference when you engage the switches and the iL engages the micro switch and sounds much more fluid.  I can't really explain it but you would have to hear it and feel it to know.  I originally wanted all iL sticks but the local guy I was dealing with here messed up and I needed to order something from GGG so I just added the two HAPP sticks.

Looking at it from the bottom you will notice HAPP uses a black actuator where as the iL uses a white one.  Aside from that and the micro switches used they are physically the same.  Also a bit of history behind these sticks is the iL is what you were probably playing on in the early 90's on most Street Fighter cabs.  Then I think HAPP got bought by Suzo and there was a split between HAPP and iL.  Suzo moved HAPP production over to China and iL is still made in Spain I believe.  It's only $2 difference and most of that is probably due to it not coming from China.

Also be careful because I came across another online site trying to pawn off HAPP as iL.  My guess is they wanted to make extra money and trick customers that don't know the difference.  Which is sad to do considering it is such a small difference to be ripping people off and losing future business.   :soapbox:
