please read - 2 player "take turn" games
« on: August 04, 2003, 02:05:17 pm »
I have a two player cabinet (two joysticks with 6 buttons each).  I want to configure older games like Galaga and Frogger to have player 1 use the left joystick and player 2 use the right joystick - each taking turns, but being able to sit side by side without having to get out of their seat when it is their turn to play.  The default setting is that both users must use the left joystick (player 1 stick) and take turns - basically play musically chairs.  I went into the config menu on mame and setup player one to accept input from both the left and right joysticks.  This solves the problem, but now newer / collaborative two player games like Metal Slug do not work (the right joystick controls both Player 1 and player 2 simultaneously).    It's really strange because if you go into mame setup while in Frogger, for example, it has a setting for "This Game" and you can set player one to use left arrow, right arrow, etc. and player two to use R, G, etc. but it does not work when you get back into the game.  Both player one and two end up using the P1 settings.   I know there is a way to get this working... please advise.

Map both joysticks to player 1 for those particular games.
just hit "tab" when into said games and I believe it should give you the appropriate options.

Yeah, you will need to setup controlsfor each of those games, not mame as a whole.

The only trouble that I can see with this solution is that you might end up messing with the other players game inadvertantly.  ie gotta keep your hands off when the other player is playing :-)

What would be an ideal solution is to play the game in 'cocktail' mode and not have the screen flip.  I dunno if you can stop the screen from flipping in a cocktail game, but if you could it would be the best solution.

Well, I think you'll just ahve to suck it up.  Really only two choices, you either play musical chairs or map player 2 controls to player 1 also.
