Project completed: The "whoa-kart"
« on: June 26, 2010, 03:12:00 am »
Finally driveable, and ready to roll!
It's a Trackmagic shifter cart, with a Kawasaki Ninja 500cc Motor "grafted" on...

I think I may want to call in a reservation at the local emergency room prior to going for a ride!

Pictures/video coming soon!

Never got moving.  Burnt the tread off the drive tire in 3 seconds and died of embarrassment.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

Here's a short video of the first time I managed to get it out of 1st and in to 2nd gear!
Amazing how quickly you can run out of parking lot!

I really, really hope you got an oil temperature sensor with an electronic sender.  If not, do not drive that thing again without replacing it.  I nearly died last year in a similar vehicle.

I would love it if usedelectronics reply was "Meh, I wore safety glasses."  ;)

Thanks guys.
Yes, next time a helmet will be used. Gotta live on the edge occasionally I guess...

As for a oil temp sensor, I don't follow.

I reused all the bike electronics, including the temp gauge/thermostatic fan/oil pressure warning etc.

I gotta side with PBJ on this one. If  anything, karma would cause him computer problems or maybe tease with his great white whale of a pinball machine turning up on craigslist for $250 and some other dork beating him to it.

If it weren't for the PBJ's of the world, this would be a boring message board that I wouldn't frequent nearly as often...and I say that even though he has been mean to me on more than one occasion.

I knew some guys who built 4 karts from scratch and they welded a whole roll cage onto the thing.  I remember when I rode in it, they told me if I ever start to flip, just make sure to keep everything inside the cage and I should be fine.  Of course they also built an oval dirt track that had about a 5 foot drop if you messed up the turn (they made it a fairly steep angle so you could go really fast around it), so I'm sure they rolled them fairly often.

Roll bars are for sissies. :)

I built one of these a few years back for an engineering competition -- the only rules were the kart had to be electric and fit into a 2' cube.  Funny video.

But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

Oh yeah, because being snarky on a message board is worthy of dying in a fire.  Awesome.   ::)

I checked the karma handbook, and being a consistent dooshbag does qualify for hair burning and oil spatters.  It's on page 645.

Of course they sell "pre-built" karts...
That kinda defeats the "BYO" concept doesn't it??

And besides.. This was way more fun, and substantially cheaper.

After following the 'Fail' Link and then having to look up what DIAF meant, I am embarrassed to say I read this post and thought 'MDF hmmm, so what insult is that an acronym for then? Mother - Die - Fire? Something Mutha-D?-F****?' so I googled MDF and was promptly reminded that this is the BYOAC and that my own arcade cab is MDF  ::)

Unfortunately, mine was still unfinished at that point, so its not in the video.

By the time it was done, it weighed about 120 lbs, had a 4HP motor on it, a speed controller from a forklift, and pulled over 200A at 24v under full throttle.  Top speed was ~ 40 mph.

Oh, and it liked to dump you on your behind.  No room in that cube for wheelie bars, and the center of gravity is, well, not optimal. :)
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

Seeing this kart has re-kindled my desire for building a NCF Blitz2 but grafting a Hayabusa lump into it.

Totally off topic, seeing PBJs pickup reminds me that I need to continue looking for a pickup.

It's pretty weird that you would go to the trouble of doing that to begin with.
