is this worth it?
« on: June 25, 2010, 12:01:10 pm »
It is a smash cab ;D and I am wondering would it be worth it to convert to mame or restore it. I know it is gutted (internals) Also, the cp is destoryed. So I get the joy of making a new cp panel  I am trying to post pics, but alot of places at work are blocked.

I'm selling a Williams Style 25" Arcade Cabinet for the Hit Game "Smash TV". The cabinet is again built for a 25" monitor and would be a great cabinet for a Jamma or any other arcade game. The cabinet has the normal scratches and scuffs like any other arcade cabinet, with absolutely no water damage and no drill holes in the front of the cabinet.

The game includes: the cabinet, the over/under coin door, both of the top and bottom marquee brackets, the bottom metal monitor bracket, the monitor chassie, and a make shift control panel. I believe the person I got it from tried to convert it to a Golden Tee. I am asking $100 for the cabinet. Offers are welcome but I am looking to get a fair price on the cabinet. If you happen to have any questions about the game or you need additional pictures please feel free to e-mail me and I will answer any questions that you might have.

Are there pictures?  I find it odd that he stress that there's no water damage, but maybe he's gotten a few cabinets that had hidden water damage? Hard to go by what he says and not what we can see. It -sounds- like a good deal to me.

Doesn't sound worth it to me.

Maybe $50...

I must live in an area of bad deals :(  I'm used to thinking 100 for a hollowed out ruin of a cabinet is good.

I called and talked to the guy and he told me no water damage no dings/dents. Just a few scratches.. also he said guess some clamed the top part down a little to tight and created a slight bow on the back half (top side). It is completely gutted and he has the bracket for the monitor and he is askin 80 for it.

I'd offer $30 TOPS

30 really? I rarely see many cabinets in the Florida area (Tampa to be exact) and I figured this would be a good starting area for doing my first cabinet. I figured might as well post it here to see what you guys would think.

It's hard to get on a message board like this and ask if something is worth x amount of money, because the supply/demand is different everywhere you go.

In your area, cabs like that could be rare, so that drives the value up.  In other areas, maybe cabs like that can't be given away, so they end up in dumpsters.

YMMV

I live in the northeast, empty cabs are given away all the time, if that cab had working coin doors, power supply, etc then maybe $50 but 80 bucks for 25 yr old pieces of wood doesnt sound like a deal to me.

I would offer $50 and go as high as $75. Sometimes a box is a box, yet it's also a big time-saver.

I am thinking of just converting a MAME machine since it would be cost effective. I am thinking of offering 95, and have him bring it to the house since I do not have any friends/family with trucks  :(

Man, wish I lived somewhere like that! Where I live, it would easily cost over $50 just to buy the wood to make a cab - never mind all that little extra stuff you'd need, plus your time and sweat putting together. I'd happily pay double that for an empty cab if it was in really good shape and I liked the artwork because I probably couldn't build one for much less.

Cabs just ain't quite that common where I live. I just see stupid junk like an old generic cab with some game no one cares about with an asking price of $400+ if it's in decent shape.

I'm with Nitz.

Finding a cab (any cab) isn't always easy. I think the 80$ price isn't abusive, seing that you have a coin door, the brackets and a few other things.
It might be 25 yrs old wood, but its still wood, and it has authentic side art (yet I am not a huge fan of Smash TV)
Depends on the condition and look of the cab. If you could have pics it would be easier.
