odd request - Nuclear launch Button
« on: June 23, 2010, 03:04:06 pm »
I am in search of a part for an upcoming project. Think old school movie, down in a nuclear Silo, guy puts a key into a lock; turns it; glass slides up, then he jams a finger on the launch button. I am trying to find something akin to the mechanism. The launch buttons are easy to find, I am looking for the whole kit and kaboodle. Worse case I could create it but I'm on a time crunch for other stuff at the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  ;D
Empire had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that's what life is, a series of down endings. All Jedi had was a bunch of Muppets

While it's a USB hub too, this seems to have everything you need:

http://www.japanprobe.com/2006/07/19/usb-nuclear-launch-button-get-yours-at-rakuten/

the tricky part will be finding one. Doesn't look like the Japanese store has them anymore.

You might have better luck cobbling your own together. Doesn't look to be too tough.

That looks like a lot of fun. But I may have to cobble it together. I was wanting to have the key make the glass cover slide away. Wire some LEDs around  the plunger button and then wire the plunger button to power on/off the machine. I think the hardest part would be wiring a motor and glass plate.

I dont know if youve ever tore apart a car door, but a modern car door window regulator would be perfect for this, providing that the track isnt curved too much.

Think boxy, like a Scion, and then take a trip to the junkyard.

after that all you would need to do is figure out a good mount for the regulator, and a track for the glass.

wire the motor up to the key switch and you are set. also you would want to have a two position key switch so you could simply turn the key one way to raise it and then switch polarity going to the motor to roll it down.

Hope this helps.

Ive never tore apart a scion, but you might get lucky. some window motors are three or more wires. three wire motors are great because the center pin is ground and then the two outer pins are up and down. if thats what a scion motor is, you dont have to worry about figuring how to switch the polarity.

any more than 4 wires is usually a computer controlled motor and is specific to that motor and i wouldnt recommend it unless you are able to locate a good pinout.

Hope this helps.

Investigate switches (Usually under nitrous switches) for cars.  There's a number of them out there similiar to what you're describing.  You'll have to do a little work to get it to interface with a PC,  if it's even possible,  they're usually toggle switches,  but it's worth looking into.  At the very least,  the housing may be what you want and you might be able to replace the switch itself with something more viable.

Good idea, however it would be huge in comparison to what at least I would think would be a good size for a switch box of this nature.

I think I will look into using a small gear motor from Solarbotics. I used one when I made my rotating monitor setup. I'll have to figure out where to get the 5v power from. I had a direct contact from a molex on my rotating monitor but I am wondering if i can draw it from a usb port.

I'll have to figure out where to get the 5v power from.

I always preach using your left over wall wart power supplies for accessories, seeing as we all pretty much have several laying around.

Searching, at the moment, for a way to cobble a USB to a 5v/gnd connector. I have a servo and a gear on order which i think will work. i still need to figure out a limiter. I may use the same limiter i did before which are magnetic. maybe something else. Then Ill have to start fabricating a "box" to house everything and a way to mount it.

@erictrumpet: don't worry i don't plan on bombing anyone......maybe canada  ;D
