Jamma Cabinet Question
« on: June 16, 2010, 12:09:10 pm »
So lately I've really been interested in getting a neo geo cabinet because it uses jamma.  I am interested in the ability to play other jamma games and maybe even installing a 60 in 1.

So I've also been told that number of non geo machines are JAMMA...like Ikari Warriors for example...or is that a neo game?

If I am looking for a Jamma harness which machines might I be looking for.  Is there a list somewhere?

Thanks

BobA

Ikari warriors is an Tradewest game.  That said Ikari Warriors is not a neo geo game.

You can get a list of neo geo games HERE

Ikari warriors catagorized as an SNK class and is probably jamma compatible as SNK did do the Neo Geo games.

You can always check if the game you are looking at is a JAMMA one by checking KLOV HERE

Thank you very much.  Good ideas.

So are basically all games after 1985 Jamma?  One would be able to buy a 60 in 1 and plug right into one of these?....If it has a Jamma harness?

Correction to above.  Ikari Warriors came as both regular Jamma and SNK which is apparently slightly different.

A 60 in one plugs into the jamma harness but make sure the game you are getting is vertical as I think that is what the 60 in one expects.

No that monitor is Horizontal.   You would have to alter the mounting to get it vertical for a 60 in 1 board.

Thanks.  Dang!!  A dude was selling this machine for about $200.  So I did check the KLOv website but I can't seem to find info to know if a cab is Jamma or not...again jamma are most games after 1990 right and all neogeos?

Also the Ikari Warriors will not work with a 60 in one board as it has rotary joystick not your regular 4 way or 8 way type.  So it has a vertical monitor but the joystick will have to be changed.   All of these gotchas can be found when you read the KLOV description of the game cab.

You have to check KLOV as there are also cabs that supersede jamma or just have a weird harness to be different.  You cannot go by date alone.

If you look at conversion class the Neo Geo MVS cab is listed on KLOV as jamma.

I was checking aero fighters on the klov website and did find the conversion class but I can't find the jamma part?  Sorry if I am being boneheaded.

Oh wait I did find one for Aline vs. Predator

Conversion Class: Capcom CPS II - JAMMA     now I think I know what to look for.

You are being bone headed, like you said.

Most machines from mid to late 1980's are JAMMA. The ones that are not are the older "classics". But a classic machine that has been converted could be jamma! So forget about learning what standard every machine used, and just ask sellers "is this machine jamma?"

Some basic background reading:

http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/JAMMA

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Amusement_Machinery_Manufacturers_Association

http://www.jammaboards.com/jcenter_jammaFAQ.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kick_harness

JAMMA is just a wiring standard and there are tons of games that use a JAMMA connector but also have additional connectors for specialty controls outside the JAMMA standard (e.g. trackballs, buttons numbering beyond 3, joysticks numbering beyond 2, rotary interfaces, spinners, etc). As an example, JAMMA/CPS-2 has an additional harness (36-pin?) to handle the extra controls. Or, some games even use a 56-pin harness with some of the JAMMA connections modified to accomodate specialty controls (some of the 60-in-1s were like that for the trackball connections).

Oh yeah -- only the 1-slot MVS boards are JAMMA -- the others use a 56-pin harness but have a slightly different pinout.

http://www.hardmvs.com/html/PCBcompare.htm

In addition to monitor orientation, you can also get different frequencies delivered through the same chassis harness, so do like Ray says and ask the seller exactly how the cab is wired and what kind of monitor is in there. Don't base it on what the original cab was.

Thanks guys.  Best way to tell if it is jamma is ask the seller. If they don't know then you do not want it.  Why didn't I think of KISS first? :applaud:

Sorry if I offended you, but I was confirming your suspicion.  ;)   I'll repeat, since it didn't sink in that I actually answered your question: Any cabinet could be any format because you don't know what someone might have done to it in its history. Therefore, you ask the seller, and mystery is solved.

PS: Thanks for the support other people, but I was being a bit too direct, and I had a feeling it might be crossing the line when I posted it, but some days I am grumpier than others.  :D

I had a great reply about neo geo and jamma but I'd rather him find the info on his own. RayB aka Rabie, don't apologize for having a sense of humor.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

I think both RayB and I know what happened.  He was a bit rude to me and I DEFINATELY overreacted by reporting him.  I was also a bit tired today and did not feel like taking unnescessary heat from someone out of right field.  He even admitted himself that he thought he might have crossed the line before posting.

I would be able to bet that if RayB and I were to have had that same conversation again face to face about me not knowing much about about Jamma I seriuosly don't think he would have said, "yeah you are a bonehead."  I mean who really talks like that in real life?  I'm sure in person he might have thought it but would not have said it to my face. I treat people on forums as I would in real life.  Now I'm sure you are all thinking...but he was only kidding.  I've read his post over a few times and I can't seem to find the humor in it...good information though.

What I do think is odd is that not one person even stuck up for me in the smallest way EXCEPT for RayB himself.  Now that says something about him.  Now I see why you all defended him with such tenacity.  RayB sounds like a solid dude.  RayB sounds like the kind of guy I'd be friends with in real life.

RayB I too am sorry.

Oh man, here we go. I'm about to get hammered now by the rest of you aren't I?  I built my entire mame cab off of this website and I've never run into this type of issue.

Thanks.  Ok now back to business.

So, I have decided to purchase the neo geo machine pictured above.  Even though the monitor is horizontal.  I talked to this videogame repair dude...he's been in business for over 20 years.  He mentioned that I could pretty easily flip the whole bezel with monitor still attached and then screw it back down.  The bezel looks square shaped enough.  If not I'll make a new one.  He then said that all you have to do is rotate a plug on the back of the monitor to switch it 90 or 270 degrees (not sure which way) for vertical!!  From there I plan to bypass the MVS and plug a 60 in 1 multi into the jamma harness.  Sound logical?  Does anyone think this will work?

Actually this is for my 7th grade math classroom (trust me, my skin is plenty thick...parents).  We have a program called PBS where kids earn tickets for prizes for good behavior.  I was thinking kids could use their tickets for game play on the neogeo/multicade in my room....word

Should work but you have to make a few adjustments to your wiring harness.   The neo geo connector is jamma but slightly different.  Here is a link to the connector showing the differences.  Jamma with NG

So is it easy to pull the wires out of the plastic part on the harness and rearrange them?  I guess I would simply snip the wires and butt connect them?

Hummm, for a total of $30 I guess I'll rewire it myself or put one of my students to work on it...

True.

THis part is not true. There's no such switch (unless the Neo Geo system does both Vert and Horizontal games, but I don't think there are any). The monitors have no switch.

All you do is plug in the 60-n-1 and it will already output correctly.

Actually he didn't really say it was a switch more like a plug with wires on it you can rotate.

So what you are saying is...no need to mess with anything on the back of the monitor.  Just rotate the bezel and monitor and I'm good to go.

Man this should be easy.

Small tip that may seem obvious. I'd plug the 60in1 in first and see which way the monitor needs to be rotated.
You may be able to flip it in the dips, but not sure.

On many monitors, it's way too easy to accidentally swap H and V instead of flipping H and flipping V, and doing it wrong will likely kill the monitor.

A 60-in-1 flips with a dip, or, since you have to physically turn the monitor anyway, just turn it to match the board.

That said, please think about the moral and legal aspects of 60-in-1 boards (or even MAME machines) before you bring one into a school.

+1 to plugging in the 60-in-1 before you rotate the monitor.

That way you'll rotate the proper way and not have to flip the yoke wires, which is what I think the repair guy was talking about. The only reason that I can think of to even consider flipping the yoke is if there is some physical contraint and you can't actually rotate the monitor to the proper orientation (since there is no such thing as a "horizontal monitor" or "vertical monitor" other than occasionally the frames that they are mounted in -- the wiring is all the same).

The MVS looks like a one-slot, which is JAMMA, so you don't need an adapter or to make any changes in the harness. The pinout that BobA refers to only applies to the 2-slot, 4-slot and 6-slot boards.

Important note: Configuring the 60-in-1 boards is best done using TEST and SERVICE switches, which may not be wired in an MVS cab. I understand that it can be done without them, but I never got it to work that way, so I always add SERVICE and TEST switches.
