Joystick Prob - Gauntlet Dark Legacy Purchase *with pics*
« on: June 14, 2010, 11:32:00 pm »
I'll be purchasing a GDL cabinet this weekend and will be transporting it upright but when I get home I want to take some things apart so I can get it down to the basement.  So:

1. What size is the monitor and can it be taken out with ease? (I have removed & discharged monitors before so I'm not afraid to handle them)

2. Is the control panel easy to remove?

3. Any other advice about the handling of this particular cab?

Thanks.

Fairly certain you can take the toppers on these gauntlet cabs off. Might help give you a bit more clearance for shorter doorways and staircases.

The dedicated cab has a 27" med res monitor.  The marquee folds down making it about the same hight as a regular cab.  It is a heavy sob for sure.  Go through the coin doors to unlatch the control panel, then remove the four bolts to remove the control panel.  You might only find two bolts though.  Both cabs I have only had two bolts in place, but there is four holes.

And make sure to have someone help you remove the monitor - it's extremely heavy.

For sure.  Even 25" monitors can be tough to remove depending on angles, etc.  Thanks for the advice guys, I'm excited to get the cab.  The pics that were sent to me look like it's in great condition including the monitor :)

good deal! Get a furniture dolly and dont bother pulling the monitor out. Also get a friend or two , preferably strong ones, Im sure that cab weighs as much or close to what my MK, KI, and KI2 cabs weigh, which is a metric ---fudgesicle--- ton

That's a ridiculous price.  Even parted out it's a ridiculous price, much less in good working condition!

When transporting, can I lay the cabinet on its back as long as I strap it down well?

good cause I'm a little nervous about the trailer I have and transporting it upright. There's not really a good way to keep it upright and strap it in. The metal eyehooks in the trailer are lower close to the bed so I can lay it down and then strap it in good.

Do you advise taking off control panel first if laying down? Other thoughts?

Hi,

Nice find! I also have a Gauntlet Legends cabinet. I paid $200Cdn for mine, it's in nice shape also, but came stripped (no monitor, no boards). Sounds like you scored!  :applaud:

- The issue with he control panel is the width it adds - you may not be able to get through standard-width doorways with it on. It's easy to take off though, so plan to remove it.

- As mentioned, the marquee just folds flat against the top of the cabinet, you'll need a Torx screwdriver or bit to lower it though. Not sure what size, I can check tonight if you want.

- I laid mine flat on it's back to bring it home, no issues. Of course mine was basically empty, so make sure the boards, etc. are all bolted tight before laying it down. If possible, vacuum out the bottom of the cabinet first so the black dust doesn't get all over the electronics when you tip it.

- It's VERY heavy! Mine had no monitor or boards, and the control panel off, and I still needed 3 guys to lift it down my staircase. Things were complicated by the fact that it barely fit around a 90 deg. corner in my stairs, but it made it.  ;D

I would say if you can strap it to a good furniture dolly you should be able to keep the monitor in so along as you have a strong guy on each side of it.

Regards,
  Ken

ALWAYS be careful laying a cabinet down for transport. Open it, check it very very carefully. Check the monitor 3 times. Would really suck to have the monitor shift and break the neck, or have a loose quarter bounce around and do the same. Be very vigilant before laying it down to move it.

Well I picked it up. Played great. Guy couldn't find keys to cab and was pressed for time so I had to transport without inspecting inside: (  almost home. Cross my fingers everything is ok.

Got it home and plugged it in... Bam!  Came on right away!  Whew! Made it home safe.  I'll send some pics when she's all cleaned up and in the game room :)  Looks to me like I really scored on this one!  I'm thinking it's a 8.5 -9 condition.  Monitor crisp and clean!

Some more pics.  The first one is the most damage to the cab.  It's nothing toget upset over since the rest of the cab is great!

no spade or frostner bits. Just a plain old drill bit. Aim for one just big enough for a pilot hole, then go slightly smaller than the keyhole, if that doesn't open it up go as big or slightly bigger than the keyhole.

All joysticks work great except the red player 3 joystick.  Does not move up.  These are the 49 way sticks so how would I go about fixing this?

Tell him Dillon sent ya, and you'll save 0.00$.

As for actual troubleshooting of your current joystick... never played with the guts of one of those before, but it's a 7x7 grid (3-3 being neutral/center). Couldn't tell you if it's a matrix or potentiometers or anything...

Hey, worst case scenario, move the joystick to player 4, and ditch a "friend" next beer night. ;)

Clean the optics. Also, check the plug in connectors. They are insulation displacement type that just "pinch" the wire...they are know for poor connection as of late...make sure both sides have all wires making contact...

If you need another stick, PM me. I've converted several working Blitz games that use the same joystick.

How do I clean the optics?  What solution do I use and where exactly would I clean?

I'll also troubleshoot the sticks.  I'll swap player 3 with player 4 and see if it works.  If it works that means I have a bad stick.  If not then the 49 way board is bad right?

Disassemble the joystick and remove the PCB. Use alcohol and cotton swabs to clean between the optics. Never use "canned air" to clean optics because it often comes out at temperatures below what the optic is designed to handle, and may damage them. The optics are an obsolete part and whatever stock is out there is all there ever will be, so we try not to ruin what still has life left.
