Need advice on where to get this cable
« on: June 13, 2010, 10:03:17 pm »
I need to find a cable that will power 4 case fans from 1 molex connector (4 pin molex to 4- 3pin fans)
Where could I find one of these at a good price?

I found this and it will work, just wondered if there was a cheaper solution...like the cable
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812195004

Or I could go for a fan controller-a rheobus but they are still around $20

Any suggestions?

Why not just use three of these:

 ;D yeah I know I'm a cheap  :censored:
the thing is I would have to buy extensions if I bought the multi-port I listed for most of the fans because of the placement of them...so after those and shipping etc I'm looking at over $20-$30
I was just thinking I could find a $3 cable to do what I'm thinking without all the money, hacking, and duck tape
I still might actually mcguyver it somehow though if I need to.

Uh... For something like that, the only reason I would even consider spending money on that kind of thing is if the guts are exposed, eg a case mod of some sort.

For something like that, it's a simple splice job. It would probably take more time to heat up the soldering iron than it would to splice, solder, shrink the tubing and wrap the whole thing to look nice.

Splicing does indeed sound like the easiest option... If you you got an old powersupply laying around, you can cut off all the molex plugs you need (you'd need to buy or cut off a male-molex somewhere else though) and splice the connections as many times as you like. If you got a local computerstore that has its own repairshop (not the computercorner in wallmart...), they probrably will have some spare powersupplies, used or broken to sell/give you. That saves even more $$ (went to my computershop and they almost gave me a bagfull :p). In that scenario you would be done for somewhere around 1$ if you have to buy the male-molex online (ask in the computershop, they might have one!).

Best of luck!

How about this?  Only $4.99.  You could always take the bracket off.  Looks like it comes off easily with screws.

I think I'll just hack the ends off, wire them in parallel, and solder/heat shrink them like savannahlion is saying. I'll still need to get a molex y splitter but I can get it at the local comp shop. thanks all!  ... just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a simple cable to do this

For my visual pinball cabinet build I used an extra molex splitter, spliced it and hooked it up to a barrier strip.  Then I crimped a bunch of spade connector ends to my fans and connected it neatly to the barrier strip.
