Wire Buttons to IPAC vs U360?
« on: June 01, 2010, 07:50:57 am »
Hi all

I just received all the bits and bobs needed for my CP from Gremlin Solutions and Andy was kind enough to include 2 button harnesses for the U360's.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of wiring the buttons to the U360 over the Ipac? Aside from the wiring being a little neater of course.

Just in case the info is relevant, Its a 4p control panel with P1+2 using U360s and 3+4 using standard 8-ways.

Thanks in advance
Hey Dudes thanks, for rescuing me, lets go for a burger.... HA! HA! HA! HA!

You have to take a close look at the emulators you are going to use.
the U360's button harness think of it like a gamepad the emulator will have to have joystick support to function properly. If an emulator only has keyboard support then you would need additional software to get it to function such as joy2key or something. Most of the better emulators have joystick support and remappable buttons.
I use the U360's and button harness and really have no problems but have found some stand alone games won't work properly or need some help to get them to function.

Cool. MAME is the main focus so I will wire them to the U360 :) I have been using an Xbox 360 controller to set all the Emulators up and have had 0 problems so far, so it should be grand :D

Thanks

might even want to consider buying 2 more u360s if it can eliminate your need for an ipac.

I mean Ipac is $40 + 2 $15 Joys ... That's 1 u360 w/ hard spring and right there.
just a thought though ...

I ended up bypassing the buttons on my u360 and am only using the ipac, but I did this because I have a swappable panel... and in this case I won't have to change any input settings as they are the same from one panel to another. If that's not really a consideration you should be good.

I just received everything today and realised that would have been possible  :tool: - Never mind, Might be able to use the joysticks + ipac for a project in the future and swap to all U360's then.

Connect your U360 in output mode to your Ipac. Mine is connected like this and it use the first player default config (kb arrows). From my little experience, most emulator will accept an hybrid config between your joystick and your kb encoder. If not, you can still use your U360 in 8/4/2 way mode via your Ipac. The only thing you won't be able to do is the analog mode.

Since you have the button harnesses, why not give it a try? :)
