I have a sense of humor actually, and enjoy a good laugh... but this was
dry and forced crap  Imop.   Looks to be written by some young gun, who has
no real clue about the games they wrote about... nor the real causes of the
arcades death.

wow. this kid is a total jackass. Space invaders the most iconic arcade game? hardly. that title will pretty much always belong to Pac-Man. And the fact that he compares everything to the 360 just illustrates how dumb this kid really is. My bet is he's about 15 years old and he started gaming with the original Xbox or PS2. And I might add that arcades are alive and well in the USA today. I know because I run one. One thats been open for just about a year now and has been making a TON of money. I also attended the Amusement Expo in Vegas back in March and got to see all the great new games manufacturers are coming out with. There is a lot of new stuff out and coming out. Arcades aren't going anywhere

I'm in agreement,  whoever wrote that is either still in highschool or one of the "Playstation is the greatest thing ever!" people.

-No mention of Pacman?  No endless sequels and the name is still ubiquitous,  and still to this day the subject of endless visual jokes like the road out west which recently used giant dots to show people how far apart cars should be on the highway...quickly had someone spray paint a pacman on it.

-Mortal Kombat among the worst?  It quickly eclipsed Street Fighter.

-Dragon's Lair?  Sure it wasn't the most gameplay intensive,  but it easily stands with Pacman and Donkey Kong as one of the most popular games in it's time...and still sells today.

Honestly,  whoever wrote that probably has never been in an arcade,  and pretty clearly doesn't understand it.

Made even more entertaining by virtue of the fact that he missed realizing the Neo Geo's price tag was pretty close to the same number the PS3 released at....

It's a cute little rant.
Somewhat flippant to someone like me
who's life resolves around video games,
but similar to how I would describe any professional sport.

Gets a resounding "meh" from me. A few funny bits but not nearly as clever as I think he thinks he was. Probably a generational thing.

I thought it was funny (in parts).  Ironically his sarcastic descriptions of cigarette burned CPs made me feel nostalgic  :lol.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you but Space Invaders is considered iconic, perhaps just not "the most iconic" yeah?  I was a teenager misspending my youth in the pinball arcades when there was only Space Invaders (before Pac-Man came along and took our attention) so it has memories for me.

Interesting to compare this attitude with that of a kid who never knew arcade games and is just discovering them, having grown tired of his X-box or whatever i.e. there are kids out there who 'get it'.

I wasn't saying space Invaders was not iconic in its own right. I just don't feel it was, as he claimed, the MOST iconic arcade game in history. there are quite a few other contenders for that title in my humble opinion. And again I feel this was written by some kid whos first gaming experience was on an Xbox or PS2. Therefore he obviously doesnt appreciate the classics and nostalgia involved in arcade and classic console games. To me the arcade era and 8 to 16 bit console era is when games were games. Dont get me wrong, I have a PS3 and a Wii, and there are some great games out these days, but many are nowhere near as fun as the classics. thats why I am building a cabinet to run Mame and emulate the classic consoles I grew up with and loved. To relive the glory days of gaming whenever I want

Like I said, I don't disagree with you, I'm just being precious about Space Invaders  ;D I'm building a little cab too, good luck with yours.  BTW I meant the kid's attitude not yours.

Pac-man is for girls (and don't they actually like it the most of all the arcade games?) I'll take space invaders over pac-man any time of the day. I feel macho now!  :)

The article had its amusing bits, but I'd like to slap the kid.

On the rare occasion that I do see an arcade in the wild, it is usually pretty packed.  Maybe not as much as they were when I was a kid in the 80s, but certainly not what I'd call "dead."  I know it's pretty typical to state that arcades are "dead," and by comparison, they are, but this article was a gross exaggeration of the truth.

I also don't care for the statement that the Neo Geo wasn't affordable by "real people."  The only difference between that system and, say, the PS3 is that there are more hard-working adults willing to shell out for a game system.  It was just too expensive for the market at the time; it wasn't outrageously priced by today's standards.

Anyway, can't expect too much from a site like this; judging from the comments ("wow your hand can read!" [sic]), its audience is mostly adolescents.  Reminds me of Destructoid. *shiver*

In case this is news to anyone, I work in a video game store.  If the number of "Arcade Revisited" games on the market and continuously re-released is any indicator then this article is so much malarkey it should run for office.

The Neo-Geo comment was priceless though.  I hear that all the time, "PS3/360 cost to damn much - I remember when NES came out.."  I finally got sick of hearing that one day and googled up the release price of an NES and plugged it into an inflation calculator.  Guess what?  The NES at launch cost MORE than the PS3 did at launch.  Go figure.

I'd also have to disagree with the Space Invaders bit - frankly, I can't stand Pac-Man but nothing screams ARCADE!!!! more than that little yellow freak.  Ah well.  I decided years ago most of society are monkeys barely able to feed themselves without flinging poo at each other, and I've yet to see evidence otherwise.

The piece is obviously tongue-in-cheek and hardly at all serious. Gross hyperbole is to be expected. Journalist merits really need not apply. :P

As others have indicated, unlikely that this is someone who was around for the heyday of arcade games (probably not even old enough to remember the '90s fighting game craze with any sincerity) and definitely not someone who has a lot of love for them. I have a sense of humor and I poke fun at stuff I love all the time, but this seemed kinda negative. I did smile a couple times I guess, but it was funny in a kinda sad way rather than a haha funny way.

I traded a late 70's Ford Maverick for an NES when they first came out.  :applaud:
(That didn't hurt nearly as pre-ordering the original the sega cd)

This article made me feel like an old man.. hahaha
I got the impression ( like many here apparently reading over the comments about it) that he was a younger guy who started gaming on a newer gen console ,is grossly uninformed on alot of his details and kinda over simplified things. At the same time it was  meant to be more of a humorous angle rather than anything of actual substance,so whatever. I didn't find it that funny, but then, I'm probably the wrong demographic he was writing this for...
I'd give him a C- overall for this attempt, and I want to emphasize "attempt", at an article (and humor)  :)

haha this point is the reason for one of my main rules I try and abide by while browsing the internet, "never read comments on articles" we have managed to build this amazing piece of technological wonder to share an endless pool of information about pretty much anything you might need to know, but  instead its full of comments like " LOLol ur a faget ps3 0wns xbox!!11"
*sigh*

Sound like bitter owners of 'plastic crap consoles' to me, who probably can't afford an arcade machine build or thinks the height of gaming is talking on a bluetooth headset desperately trying to find girls in MMORPG's or war games, or wandering around aimlessly in a sandbox adventure where the only hand/eye co-ordination required is whacking it to a mildly provocative female sprite conveniently placed by the equally-sad programmers. If it weren't for arcades there simply would be no home scene today.

Kids eh? They know ---fudgesicle--- ALL.

Guys stop stressing out (about being old or the kid not getting "it") The undeniable fact is we were "there" from the very beginning (of gaming,) we played it "all"!
