Hey all...I'm working on building my very first cabinet. At this point, I am in the design phase which I hope is nearing completion. I've been modeling this up in Sketchup, which is absolutely crucial for me, and was really easy to learn. Highly recommended, especially for me, as I really couldn't picture it in my head, and this really let me visualize my end goal. I've been using the Project Arcade book and basically taking that design and tweaking it as needed to make my cabinet what I want. This is not a traditional cabinet. It uses a 32" Samsung LCD HDTV, which will be able to rotate 90 degrees depending on the game. I'm considering putting an opaque plexiglass bezel over the TVs original bezel, as it is bigger on one side, and generally takes you out of the experience. Behind it, though, I plan on having some artwork, on the rear bezel. It's a quad cabinet, with a 4-way, spintrak, U-Trak, a set of rotary and Sanwa JLW. I'm incredibly excited to see this realized. But, before I can jump ahead to that step, I'd like to hear some feedback regarding my design, as I do have some concerns.
First off, you can't see it, but the total base depth of the unit is 3' 8". I'm wondering if I really need to come out that far under the CP to support it. It would be nice if I could knock the depth down? But will the CP be sturdy? The CP itself is 1' 9" deep. The monitor needs to be back a ways because it is large when vertical, and it needs some space to rotate.
What about the bottomview, which is basically the setup as the Project Arcade unit, just with the floor extended a little further, should I put another strip near the front, or should it be fine? It will be on 3" casters.
Now take a look at the open front and rearview...you'll see a big 4x8x26" in there for the monitor stand, which requires a depth of 4" to screw into, and whose base is 6" tall. I'm also pondering a 2x4" sticking up from the monitor shelf to either the speaker shelf or the top.
I'm also pondering if I should put a few buttons in the middle between the 4-way and spinner for use with games using those controls? I figure with the trackball I'll just use the player 1 or 2 buttons.
I also might offset the 3 UI buttons, so that I don't accidentally hit the cancel button instead of pause.
Where should I put the speakers? The rear bezel will be made of plexiglass, and I'm not sure I want to deal with putting holes in it. Is that the recommended option?
I guess that's it for now...if I think of anything I'll update this post. Thanks so much all for your time and thoughts...I wouldn't have been able to make it this far without all the great collective knowledge that's been spread around throughout the years.
