  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

I've done it on 3-3 as well (real hardware). I knew that would be the answer to that video.

Also, to answer your 2nd question, it appears to be emulation, or at least partially. Some of the color palletes are using the RGB color space, instead of the YUV color space of the stock NES.

I've totally done this before!!!

I remember hearing that rumor from a friend and trying for a long time to do it. It sucks without emulation and save states and all that, you had to get there every time you wanted to try. I was a kid and it was pretty cool to find a glitch in a game I loved.

PS I guess this means that all video game rumors must be true!

Pretty neat!  I have to admit that even though I didn't know it was possible to jump a flagpole on a 'stock' game of Mario, I did know what was going to happen because I've had a Game Genie almost as long as I've been playing Mario.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I remember thinking that way back when I first played SMB. However, since I generally end up bypassing 3-3 entirely, I never really discovered the opportunity.

Yeah, Game Genie is how I first did it as well, but have made the jump in 3-3 since then.

It looks as the opportunity is on levels that have elevators. The distance looks shorter than levels that have block walls preceeding the flag.

You meant to say

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polybius_%28game%29

Polybius is a supposed arcade game featured in an Internet urban legend. According to the story, the Tempest-style game was released to the public in 1981, and caused its players to go insane, causing them to suffer from intense stress, horrific nightmares, and even suicidal tendencies. A short time after its release, it supposedly disappeared without a trace. No evidence for the existence of such a game has ever been discovered.[1]

Thank you, yes I did.  Funny thing is, I had this crazy dream last night, about this undergraduate I work with dying.  It was crazy how real it felt, and my wife said that my eyes kept twitching and blinking.

I think that something about reading about this stuff and having the expectation to have these experiences may be a trigger.

I remember Polybius being discussed in some magazine, EGM I guess. I remember someone in high school claiming they played the game as well. Of course, that dumb ass claimed the procedure for dumping cart ROMS involved, "removing the game data from the cartridge, copying the game data to a floppy, then placing the game data back on the cart." No ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.  :laugh2:

WARNING: DONT WATCH TOO MUCH OF THIS.  YOU MAY START TO BLOW CHUNKS.

Had a thought,  1981... Portland Oregon... Suicidal Tendencies and Nightmares... Perhaps this helped spark the Grunge Revolution in the Late 80s.

Maybe that could be used as exhibit A in the case that it did exist.

Where is the game play? Ohhh. I wondered what the shooting sound was. None of it bothers me. I remember that the early development version of Tempest moved the screen about, keeping the ship in one place, like is shown here. It makes for a very static kind of game play. Maybe in this case if the ship were at the bottom, more like a gun sight, it might look more like 'you' were moving about.

I am doubting the 'trippy' parts of the video. It would require a raster monitor. Perhaps if the system used a mirrored, dual monitor system. One below, one above.

They exist, in a museum somewhere in Nevada about 1/2 a mile underground, I think it's called Area 51.
