Sound/Volume in Midway games in MAME?
« on: May 24, 2010, 06:28:09 pm »
Just curious if there is any way to fix or regulate the volume for Midway games in MAME (i.e. 2-on2- Ice Hockey, MK, NBA Jam)?

I notice that every Midway game I play has VERY low volume by comparison, why is this, and is there a fix?

You can adjust the volume on a game-by-game basis.  Of course, you need to do it for each one.  The alternative is to use a derivative build of MAME that has a volume regulation routine built in.  I can't remember the popular one that people use.  I thought it was MAME++, but that doesn't seem right.

There are buttons you can press to adjust the volume in those games - I think the default is - for down and = for up. It will save your volume setting. The weird thing is, I think if you put the volume to the max it introduces some clipping/distortion so you'll have to play around to find a setting that's just right.

hit f2 or f3 one of those. and you have to adjust it in their special menus. they always played low by default.

Awesome tip. I never even thought of going in to the BIOS. Strange that these games shipped that quiet. In an environment where the games that made the most noise gained the most attention its bizarre that certain games where that low out of the gate.

Either way, thanks for the tip!

real PCBs are like that too. Well MKII, UMK3, NHL Open Ice and NBA Jame TE are, I don't own the others.

From the Mame FAQ:

Mortal Kombat II / Mortal Kombat 3 / Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3  NBA Hangtime / NBA Maximum Hangtime 2 on 2 Open Ice Challenge

The volume for this game is TOO LOW!
When the game is running, hit F2 to get to the internal service menu. Hit F2 again to "close" the service switch so that you won't get stuck in the menu. Now, navigate to the "Volume Adjust" option (following the directions provided) and adjust the volume. It's best to keep the volume no more than 80-90% filled as it might cause your sound to be overdriven and crackle. When adjusted, simply exit the menu.

I realize you got your answer.  Just posting this from the official source so if someone searches for this, they will see it.
