Robotron = Generic Video Game noise
« on: May 24, 2010, 05:20:25 pm »
Hi all,

Has anyone else noticed that when generic video game noise is required in films and on TV they usually use the FX from Robotron? I thought that this was purely a British phenomenon but I have heard Robotron on a few U.S. shows too.

More importantly is :notworthy: Mr Jarvis receiving any royalties?

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

In the US, I've noticed the use of the 2600 Pac-man sounds the most.

Not exactly the same thing, but I used to hear the 'nurse pages' from Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime in TV shows all the time.  I'm guessing they were stock from somewhere else and not owned by Queensryche.

Hope that's not too off topic....

Yep. It's stock. "Dr Blair, telephone please, Dr Blair......Dr Hamilton, Dr Jay Hamilton" or something like that. I always made the Mindcrime connection too. ;D

I always notice people playing DMD era pinball machines in TV shows/Movies that mysteriously have the electromechanical "ding ding ding" sound effects  :lol

I've heard a lot of sounds from Doom on the PC.  Mainly the sound of the monsters dying and getting hit and stuff.  Also the sound of the rocket launcher.  I'm guessing that ID software used some royalty free sound effects for their game.

I can't say I've ever heard Robotron in tv or movie sound effects. It's always Donkey Kong and Atari 2600 Pac Man. Which is really weird, because often they are showing someone playing something modern like a Playstation 2 or Xbox, and yet the effects are 80's bleeps and bloops.

It's also in We Are The Strange, in the arcade scene. (But this movie is chock full of sourced sounds, so no surprise)

NO MORE!!
