need a pc...
« on: May 24, 2010, 03:38:13 pm »
I recently obtained a WG9800 and decided to use it in my cab, so i ordered a ArcadeVGA3000 to run it and now i have a new issue.  The PC that it was running was using a Dell Precision 470 i had kicking around the house but i have just recently found out that the ArcadeVGA won't run on dell's so im looking into obtaining a new PC.

I only have around $400 to spend on a new PC and would like to know what sortof machine can run the ArcadeVGA within that price limit, if any?  Any personal recommendations?

Any and all input is appreciated!

Are you looking to build [assemble] or buy?

Do you have parts to re-use?

I was considering either option, whichever would give me a decent machine for the money.

Simplest mini-ITX board with Core i3 support
Simplest core i3 processor
Arcade VGA card
ram, disk etc as you like.

ArcadeVGA won't run on Dells?

The Dell in my MAME cab would disagree with that.  :P

It works with your dell?  I put my ArcadeVGA in mine and all i got was only the windows xp boot screen; then the monitor says unacceptable analog output.  I assumed it locked out non-dell video cards and thus it would only display the boot screen and the same will happen wit hthe WG9800.

Well then, that gives me hope with my current box, haha.  Im going to have to play with it to see if i can get it working and avoid spending the extra $400.  Curious if anyone else know about how to remedy this?  The dell is running windows xp64 if that helps.

Thanks for the responses!

There's some important details to installing ArcadeVGA so it works right.

IIRC, you need to remove any Nvidia display drivers (or is it ATI? can't recall) from the PC before attempting to install the ArcadeVGA.  I ran into this and downloaded the driver cleanup tool, and everything worked great.

Anyway, take a closer look at the install directions on the CD.  I'm at work right now so I can't look it up, but you should have little trouble getting this working with the instructions that Andy provides.  :)

It should work fine on a Dell, unless your dell is a P2 then maybe you might have an issue.

Just thought of this but would the fact im not using PAL monitor have something to do with it?  Could there be a jumper or something on the card that would switch it to NTSC?

I don't know anything about ArcadeVGA, but this might fit your needs....

I bought one at someone else's suggestion.  I just loaded my MAME up, stuck it in the cab and really haven't touched it since.

Problem solved.  It had nothing to do with the dell pc, it was my tv i was using.  Thanks to everyone who responded!
