Received my new panel, but need a little help
« on: May 18, 2010, 08:22:57 pm »
So when I place the joystick over the wood (3/4") just too see how it looks and the happ 8 way sticks out but not as much as i'd like it to stick about as much as in this joysticks

but when I place it to test it out, it sticks only enough for the rubber part to stick out, how can I make it more like in the pic?

If I'm reading you're question correctly, the answer is that you need to route a groove for the base in the bottom of the CP. THis will bring the stick higher. Also, there is a spacer that you cna use to raise it a bit.

Holy run-on sentence, Batman!  Throw some punctuation in there!  :lol

It's probably bottom mounted right?  Top mount instead, it will sit up higher.

Top mounted meaning routing a slot ABOVE the wood not below, not exposed mounting plates.  Not the same thing.

Right- if you want to bottom-mount the stick, but it's too low on the top side, you'll need to use a router and route out some of the wood so it's higher.

Depending on the thickness of the wood will affect how much material you can eliminate.  There are numerous threads in the Woodworking forum that talk about bottom mounting (or under mounting) joysticks.

Another option, for certain sticks, is to get longer shafts.

Ultimarc 360s and Sanwa JLW sticks can both use the long shafts that Divemaster sells.

I think I did what you want to do... You route a square in the top of the panel and have it sit below the plexi/overlay.
I did two other things with mine... I used t-nuts so there are no bolts through the plexi and I also put the dust washer under the plexi. The top of the stick base is sunk down for clearance to do this.

There is some debate about the proper installation of the dust washers, and there might not even be a correct way, but I think they look kind of sloppy up top (and conceal the art!).

+1 on the dust washer comment, I wish I'd routed space for them underneath the formica on the top of my CP.

But, in the end, I think I came up with a relatively decent solution, at least for my cab.   ;)
