Galaga Artwork
« on: July 31, 2003, 10:37:23 am »
I am working on a new cabinet that will have a Galag theme.

I am trying to replicate look of the Roger Dean graphics from the marquee and side art.

I have .jpgs of the marquee, sideart, overlay and frontpanel.  But I could use a higher resolution version of the side art.  Any links would help.

I could also use a link to a font that resembles the Galaga marquee.

I am creating the custom art in Illustrator 10.  Frosticulus' tutorial has been a big help!  Trying to manipulate all the bezier curves on my laptop, using a trackpoint, while riding on the train last night was a lot of fun! NOT!!!!

That is a great job!  I can't use it as is, because I am doing a custom set of graphics.

It did show me how to do a few things though.

Thanks.

Here is where I am at right now.

I know the colors are matched yet and the letters are done as seperate pieces. (ie the red border does not surround the entire word).  I have already started creating the additional letters that I will need for the custom Marquee, sideart and overlays.

I still need to tweak a few paths, but I am happy with how it is coming along.

Paint Shop Pro 6.0.  I always hear people bagging on PSP, but I think it does the job pretty well.  The resolution on the pic you see was degraded to reduce file and pic size.  My hi res version is top notch.

I like Paint Shop Pro ver 7.

I also have access to Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and AfterEffects.

I am using Illustrator, so that the art will be total vector based.

Here is the customised version.

I am not 100% happy with it yet, but this is pretty close to what I want.

ErikRuud,

Not too be picky about someone else's art (of course I am now going to be picky), but I noticed that the contrast (light green / dark green) are not horizontal like the original galaga marquee.  All the letters in the Galaga marquee are split horizontally and at the same spot in each letter.

I would aslo make the letters a little closer together.  In the original Galaga all the letters touch except the last "A".  You have a few letters in the middle that aren't connected and look pretty distant.

You did a great job of re-creating letters in the "Galaga" fashion.  Mine was easy, only had to come up with one letter, you had to make a few.  Are you going to add the "MIDWAY" and "BALLY" logos or modifications of them?

JT,

As I said, I'm not quite finished.  Now that I know that I can get it the way I want, I will clean it up.

The letter spacing is pretty much the same as the original.  I created this on top of a picture of the original.  The red outlines go around each letter instead of around the entire word.

The Midway logo and such will not be included.  This is not a Midway game.  I am just copying the Galaga style.  It was the favorite game of the owner.

I will be using the side art as guide when I do the control panel overlay, not the original cpo.

Looks good Erik.  I would throw in a "by: MYWAY " (instead of Midway) just for grins :)

I know what you mean.

All of this Galaga styled artwork is for someone else's machine.

Now I want to redo mine because this stuff has turned out so well.

did you mean to contribute your vector based galaga-inspired art to the vector library http://www.mametrixreloaded.com/ ??

As soon as I am doing messing around with it.  I keep tweaking parts of it.

I just changed the overlays that will go around the function buttons on the top of the CP this morning.
