Layout input requested
« on: May 06, 2010, 02:06:31 pm »
Would value suggestions on the attached panel layout before prototyping.  Approximate dimensions are 28" by 17.5".  Printed actual size seems OK but it is hard tell about playability of the spinner and dedicated 4 way.

I'll figure out admin buttons and refine overall size once I'm happy with the controls.  I don't want to go past 28" wide however.

BTW I never touched a CAD program before last week and threw this together in QCAD.  Nice program and documentation for the price.

dont look back i mean i can actually look at that and tell what im suppose to do.. a lot of franken panels need a manual to figure out what goes where.

one suggestion.. perhaps move the controls up a few inches to try and center it.

but the layout it self dont look to bad.
Anyone got change for a dollar?
PLEASE HELP NEED Fastmame .70 and .9* releases

Good suggestion on centering vertically.  I think there'll be enough runway before and after the trackball.  I've jammed a finger once or twice on a cramped panel - not fun.

I've got plenty of time to plan since no assembly can start until the rec room is finished.  Planning is ok, part buying is ok but assembly is a no-no.

Looks like a very practical layout.  That will serve you well.  In fact it looks a lot like mine!

My one concern would be the proximity of the P2 joystick to the trackball.  Right handers may have a little trouble with that.  Maybe move the joysticks & buttons a couple of inches up, and drop the trackball a couple of inches closer to your body to remedy?

Also, I would move the spinner a few inches to the right, over the P1 buttons.  When you rest your arm inbetween the P1 joystick & buttons to access the spinner, you will want it off set a bit to allow your wrist to bend in while using it.  Added bonus is right handed spinner ppl will recognize the same benefit when resting their arm between the P1 buttons and the trackball.

That's money input, exactly what I'm looking for since I'm developing my sense of ergonomics.  I looked to the slimcade for inspiration.

Your layout is very clean which I personally like.  Are the 3 buttons above the trackball mouse functions?

Yep - they're the 3 mouse buttons.  Although I've only ever used the leftmost(mouse) button.  That's not to say the others aren't useful...I just have never used them!
