My New Driving Cab
« on: April 30, 2010, 11:43:28 pm »
I wanted to do a driving setup "someday", but as luck would have it,
I came across a donor cab cheaper than I could ever build one ($50)

It started out as the pink half of a Sega Virtual-On set.

It was missing the screen, control panel & the plastic endcap on the side.
(All the boards, power supply, amp etc were all there! No idea if they work)
The marquee had a crack in it, so I covered it with bondo and painted it gloss black for now.
Still a lot of work to do cosmetically once I decide on a theme, but the feel is exactly
what I wanted.

nice find!!!  that looks like a great starting point for an awesome driving cabinet.  is this going to be a PC based cabinet?  I just ask because it seems that alot of people doing racing cabinets end up using a console instead.  I know they are not graphically amazing anymore, but you could use a modded xbox in there, fill a hard drive with a bunch of racing games.  Avalaunch can be modified to make a nice and simple Front End to launch your games from....plus they are cheap (if you can find one)

either way, looks like you are off to a great start. make sure you take lots of pictures of your progress

Dang! 50$ for that. That's one heck of a deal.

Congrats. I think I could FIND space if I came across a deal like that!

It's PC based.  It's running off my MAME PC until I nickel and dime my way to another one.
I'm primarily running Nebula's Sega Model 2 emulator (Daytona USA, Sega Rally, Super GT, OverRev, Desert Tank, Waverunner, etc.)
Kind of fitting since the cab was originally a Model 2 game.  Force Feedback also works!!!
I also set up a gamelist in MALA for the few driving games that work at full speed, but haven't had time to calibrate all the analogue controls.
It gets time consuming.  The game on the screen in the pics is Need For Speed:Underground for PC.

My next steps are putting plexiglass in front of the TV and attaching an act labs shifter to the side of the seat.
The shifter mounted next to the wheel works by hitting a switch in front and in back of it.  It returns to center.
I'll probably remove it completely and wire credit & start buttons to the switches when I put together another pc.
