Ultra-wide LCD Screen for the Ultimate Marquee
« on: April 29, 2010, 08:00:19 pm »
This is spin off of RandyT's thread on using an LCD for a marquee

It would be so cool the have the marquee change to whatever game your playing and even have video to go with your start up :dizzy:

I found 2 makers of "Stretch LCDs" they are rather expensive, but maybe they'll come down in price someday
still I did a lot of research a couple years ago and the only way to do it was to have an existing lcd cut down and that was $3000 not including the monitor, so these are a lot less

LG for around $1000 29" wide 17:6 apect ratio

Litemax around $1500 29" wide 16:6 aspect ratio

they both make a 38" version
and litemax makes a 15" version that might be nice for a bartop

Not sure it's big enough for a bartop, but if you do a search on fleabay for "Rear View Mirror Monitor", you'll find some 800x200 10" ones for under $100.

example: http://cgi.ebay.com/L0401M-EONON-10-2-New-LCD-Car-Rear-View-Mirror-Monitor-/360252791333?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e0bd5a25

Usually only a composite input, but you wouldn't be using it to read.
(Might actually be kind of neat to display controls......hmmmm)

Pretty small (but also pretty cheap).

If any brits are wondering, just checked ebay and they got some of these for 41 quid delivered from Hong Kong:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAR-10-2-TFT-LCD-SCREEN-REAR-VIEW-MIRROR-MONITOR-UK-/110507644197?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Audio_TV_Electronics_In_Car_Entertainment_GPS_In_Car_Audio_Players_PP&hash=item19bac4d525

A quick toy with dimensions and I've just worked out a single-player bar-top with a 12" LCD and a Mini-ITX form factor board would fit and be in proportion with this marquee, with just a few mm to mask round the edge of the monitor bezel. Might do one for shits and giggles.

That'd definitely make a cool marquee.

I'm guessing the proportions aren't quite right for a pincab.

I'll have to check out those "rear view mirror" screens. I could see a lot of uses for a mini screen like that.

If anyone ends up trying one of these it would be cool if you could share your results.  Looks very promising.

Well.. there goes my idea. I had one in the works for a few months now. Guess that's out.

Finally we can make a single-screen Darius II cabinet

Too bad this niche can survive, where much more wanted 4:3 screens in big sizes are not made.

I'm in the planning stages of writing something that would display instruction cards on a secondary screen,  this isn't so different,  I see no reason I couldn't add this as an option as well should I succeed.  Thing is though,  odds are good what I'll release will be a plugin for Hyperspin or maybe Mala or both,  it'll probably make my life 10,000 times easier that way.

Noticed that the one I put the link up for has the 2nd video input specifically for the backup camera.
Assuming it automatically switches when the car is put in reverse,
it would be easy to wire a button up to make it switch.
So you could have the marquee on video 1 as the default, then when you press the button, it would switch to video 2 which could display controls.
I haven't seen any video cards with dual composite out, so it would require at least two cards.

I have too many projects started already, but it's fun to come up with ideas.

It does. I believe there's a "control" wire to switch video. For the intended application, you tie the control wire to something that triggers when you throw the gear in reverse. Such as the reverse lights.

Overkill. Just use a software application to make the change. It's cheaper and more flexible than buying two video cards for this purpose.
