Question about High Scores
« on: April 23, 2010, 05:17:28 am »
Anyone know how to get these to save in MAME?  I know somewhere there was an addon to get high scores to save, but also read that the newer versions of mame don't allow this plugin anymore?  Let me know if anyone knows how to go about doing this, I'm a noob :P

Just compile your own version using the Hi Score patches.

well I tried this.  Tried compiling my own version and using the hi score file, set up the hi score folder.  Still isn't letting me keep scores.  Does it only work on older versions?  I just can't seem to figure this out. :/

No, it works in current versions.

Did you apply the hi score diff when compiling?
Create the hi folder?
Add the hiscore.dat?

You have to follow the instructions to a 'T' for it to work. It will take some time for it to do its thing. To sit there and watch it will make you bonkers.  :dizzy:

Do it before bedtime, goto sleep, it will be done by the time you wake up!  :D

There are alternative distributions of MAME that have high-score support.  I've been a programmer for years and I wouldn't bother attempting to compile my own when someone else has gone to the trouble.

Yes I've actually done all of that ; ; and it still won't work.  Unless.. maybe I'm using the wrong diff?  what's the name of the hi-score diff?

Depends what mame version you're using. Have a look at the first post here:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=64298.0

Download whichever one you need, then have a look at this page:

http://mrdo.mameworld.info/compile.html

As Fordman said, follow the instructions to a T. Except when he talks about applying the "u" update diff, you actually want to apply the high score diff.

This should work. Failing that, you can always get an alternative distribution of mame as mentioned, or just use an older version that still had high score support.

Hope this helps. :)

OK, so I was able to compile MAMEUI with the help of HeadKaze's MAME Compiler.  However, even though I have a Hi folder for the high scores, and added the diff files in correct sequence and EVERYTHING, I still cannot get MAMEUI to save my high scores.  Is there something I'm missing all together?  I don't get why this has to be so frustratingly difficult.  It's just a storing of numerical data!

Do you have highscore.dat in the same folder as mameui.exe? That seems like the most obvious solution.

As above, check to make sure the hiscore.dat file is in the directory.

Also, what game are you trying to save the scores for?  Not all games save in the same way.

At a stretch, how are you exiting mame?  I believe some frontends (or exiting strategies) don't neccessarily close MAME in such a way as the score is saved.

Just download pre-compiled Mame 1.33 and hiscore.dat and source code from the link below. Load these onto you computer and you'll be off and running - all the hard work is done for you already:

I think I'm just not gonna even bother with the highscore.dat and diff files.  From what I've read, they were removed for a reason and replaced with save state.  Which I think to keep my scores saved I'll just go with save states :/  Only reason is, if you think about it, most arcade machines unless they had a built in feature, didn't save scores when you unplugged them.  And basically when you leave mame, it's like you're unplugging the arcade =/  So... I'll just go save states :P
