wheel and shifter
« on: July 30, 2003, 09:41:06 am »
Hey,

I just won this cab on ebay (australia) for my first mame cab project (time to finally ditch my desktop box that I hacked together as a "starter" nearly 2 years ago!!) and am picking it up this weekend:
.

My plan is to remove the driving controls and install a basic 2 player CP (dual 8ways, 6 buttons).

Just wondering if anyone would be interested in the wheel and shifter? What would they be worth to someone here?

I'm trying to decide whether I should keep them and incorporate them into a "stage 2" removal CP element.

Just thought I'd gauge interest...

cheers

I would say hold on to then, if you aren't hurting for cash, as you never know when the driving bug will bite you and you will kick yourself for getting rid of them.

They go pretty cheap on ebay these days....  Look and see if there any that come up on ebay.  But I would make a guess that they aren't worth shipping unless you keep it in country.  I got 3 true pole position wheels on ebay for about 10 bucks each (another 10 for shipping).   But again, its all location.  You might find that you can't get them there... and if you put them up for sale, you can get any price you want.

But aside from that.  Sure you don't want it?  If its a 360 spinner (turns all around) its an easy hack and there are some great driving games in mame that use them...  Oscar has some special order encoder wheels that have a big diameter center that might fit around the center shaft... Then a optic board and a hacked mouse... and you have it hacked for about 20 bucks..

I know you're anxious to get your MAME cabinet built, but driving games are usually best left driving games. Have you considered leaving that machine as a dedicated MAME driving machine?

You can always hook up your external CP to it to play other games until you get another machine to be your all-in-one. (Just an idea.)

That is a stand-up driving game(?), though, and probably something else originally.. I don't see the harm in converting it (looks pretty generic anyways).

Almost all Australian cabinets are generic.  Lot of generic Allied & Leisure cabs, and other stuff like that.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Yeah, I don't think this is too original!!  :)

Most of the cabs i remember from my misspent mid-eighties youth were this type of generic lowboy, usually with a dodgy photocopy of a game's name as the marquee. Sure made the MK, simpsons and TMNT etc cabs look amazing when they finally turned up in my local arcade!!

Thanks for the input guys and I'll be sure to post some pics when I have made some progress. I'm thinking I'll incorporate that wheel in some way now  ;)
