Games that "can" be played on a Star Wars Yoke
« on: April 21, 2010, 02:51:02 pm »
Making a list of games that "can" be played on a StarWars yoke,  "can" meaning like paperboy or pole position, not the same exact controller but playable none the less, add some if you think there are more:  PS I stole this list from Havok's old post and just added paperboy...

Star Wars
Paperboy
Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
Spy Hunter
Pole Position
Pole Position II
Hydra
Firefox
Stun Runner
TomCat
Vapor TRX

Pole Position is a 360° steering wheel game.  I don't think you will be happy with playing it on a SW yoke.  Any game that uses a "paddle" should work.  Games that use a "dial" won't work well.

o naa the guns were just for show/ effect. It was really just an analog stick controlling the curser on screen.

You could use a tracball. Or in theory ya the yoke too i guess. left and right for x axis, push and pull for y axis? lol interesting way to play.

You can play any analog wheel driving game as well by mapping the accelerator/brake pedals to either your y-axis for analog pedal games or a fire buttons for switch pedal games.

Its a bit fiddly but can work quite well, so you can add most of the driving games with analog controls to your list.

Roadblasters?

IIRC Roadblasters is a bit of an oddball, having an optical wheel but with restricted movement to mimic a 270 wheel, so it may not translate well to a SW yoke. Any thoughts guys??

Yes, any analog pot based game can use a yoke to control it.

As for driving games... you probably wont like controlling the gas by moving
forwards / back though.

A better option, is simply to put an additional set of
wires going to a separate pedal units pots.

Depends what you have in addition to the SW Yoke. I have a MAME'ed Return of the Jedi, where I mounted an Up-Down Shifter on the right, a Hand Throttle on the left and a pair of Analog Pedals.

That opens up a lot of both flying and driving games.

In the Mameplus gui, use the control type>paddle folder. Its not perfect but you'll get a decent list.

That's correct.  I have tried with a 270 wheel in the past with no luck.  It requires an optical wheel/spinner.

Go to MAWS and select the "deluxe search" option from the top.  Select genre=driving and control=paddle for a list of 270° steering wheel driving games.  This list won't be as good as using RomLister though, as I believe MAWS only uses the first entry in the controls list for each game.  If the game supports multiple input methods (e.g., 1000 Miglia: Great 1000 Miles Rally), MAWS will only list what MAME shows as the first option (8-way joystick in this case).  You can change the settings to control with either an 8-way joystick or a 270° or 360° steering wheel for that specific game.
