WT (Ontario, Canada): Xbox1 modded or not for Emus
« on: April 18, 2010, 09:22:53 am »
Hello,
I am trying to put together a system for my tv to play mame, snes, genesis, n64 etc.. I have sold my xbox years ago but see the emulators are running mint at the moment.  Just wondering what model I need ie) regular or upgraded one. and what price I can get one for? Would love one pre loaded so I do not have to do much,.... anyone help let me know.  If xbox is not a fit for me pls advise what pc I should get.... (looking to run N64, mame roms (Mortal kombat, tekken, wrestlefest)

thanks
Jim

You want a modded Xbox, definitely.

Hey
So the modded xbox it will play N64 full speed? and plays mame games like MK1,2,3 full speed?  I have tried to find videos with no luck showing the games I am after.

Does it matter if it is hard modded vs. soft? and can i get wireless controls?  any idea for price? also do I need to upgrade the xbox?

thanks
Jim

You can use either - soft or hard modded essentially do the same thing. There are benefits to it being hardmodded but unless you get a bit techie you don't need hard modded - it offers no real benefit you'd need.

To answer your question - as far as I am aware and from my experience - Midway software won't emulate at full speed - that means your Mortal Kombats, etc. Not even a modded 360 can handle those games yet! As for N64 games - well, a lot of them play well, a lot play crapply. Just depends how system hungry the game is. However, for most other games, a modded Xbox does a great job and I can't recommend them highly enough. You're looking more at 2D though. They play Neo Geo, CPS1,2 and 3 very well and most games in MAME as well. SNES, Mega Drive, NES, Master System, etc, etc are flawless. And considering an Xbox can be picked up for next to nothing and easily modded to do all these things there's no reason not to get one!

Hello
Hmm I thought if it played n64 it would do MK? that is odd.. is there a MK game for xbox that has 1,2,3?  if so what is it called.. also what kind of HD space is needed for emus/roms.

thx

don't hold me to this, but i think you can get MK3/umk3 (not sure which) as a pack-in on the special edition of one of the xbox-era MK games.
also, i think you can get them in the Midway arcade legends games, but they might be named something else, never picked any of them up, but they're just compilations of Midway arcade games, and i know you could at least get MK1 this way

as far as the HDD space needed, it all depends on which system you want
NES, in total is less than 200 megs, i think
snes, is a little under a gig
genesis is about the same
n64 is 2-3 gigs iirc, though a lot of games don't run very well( ex. Goldeneye, it actually runs well, but is IMPOSSIBLE to play with the xbox controller)
arcade/neo geo games really vary, never put the full set on my xbox
anything cd based will be huge

course, that's for the full romsets.
if you're talking individual games, that's a whole different story

Just read up as to how to do it yourself - it's so easy (and cheap). The standard HDD is 10gb, so it depends on what you're putting on there.

Hey
Yea it seems fairly easy, my worry is adding a larger HD.
