The 1993 Super Mario Bros Movie
« on: April 17, 2010, 01:36:36 pm »
Watched this again with my son and this is a lot better than I remember it being when I was a kid...  Your thoughts?

Still a little ridiculous plot, but I like it.

It's one of those movies that you cant really hate if you were a byproduct of Nintendo in the 80's or 90's at all. Plus, John Leguizamo is the MAN!  :applaud:

Ewww!  He's skeavy.  Plus, everything he's in, you just see John Leguizamo the actor, never his character.  The only thing I could put up with him in was Romeo & Juliet.

Aside from Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil 1, i don't remember any videogame based movie that didn't suck. Please prove me wrong though.

Street fighter sucked. I can remember leaving the movie theater when I was 14 thinking … WTF was that? My dad said something along the lines of “I don’t get it… why did you want to see this movie…?” . I was like…….. your right …….. video games are stupid…

Luckily Mortal Kombat came out a few years later restoring my faith. I remember coming out of the theater in the mall first or second day it came out thinking it was awesome. As soon as we got out I said to my friend, “did you here that sound track? We need to buy it right now!!!” We ran over to whatever CD store was in the mall at that time and yelled at the casher “Mortal Kombat Sound track where!!” That bastered was all like “I think we got 1 copy of it in yesterday”

I grabbed him by the shirt color “WTF only 1 copy!”

Turned out most places only had a few copies come in. They did not think it was going to be a big seller. My fried bought the 1 copy since he was the only one to have a CD player in his car. It took me over a month to get mine.

Jackie Chan's City Hunter is the best Street Fighter movie.

(Sonny Chiba's "The Street Fighter" is the best of them, but it has nothing to do with the game)

There were a TON of great lines in the Street Fighter movie, especiall by Bison/Raul Julia it just the story was so...stupid and the acting and scenes were so cheesy. It really did have potential if they would have made it more serious like the first MK movie (MK: Annihilation was cheesier then Street Fighter) The Chun Li movie was just terrible.

Super Mario Bros - man, I really wanted to like that movie because I was so excited when I first heard about it, but I just couldn't. I think I like it better now though, since I can look at it as harmless silly fun, whereas at the time I couldn't get over the fact that the movie was so hyped and just didn't seem to capture the spirit of the games on which it was based. (Though honestly, I don't think any movie ever could.)

Quite liked the first Mortal Kombat, the second one not so much though.

Never bothered with Street Fighter, though sounds like I might have to check it out sometime just for a laugh!

Wooo, first post after lurking here for like 2 years!

Welcome then

Happy your disappointment in SMB can bring you out of the closet

You made a great point about the HYPE.  The HYPE is what really killed this movie.  If it was an indie film that few people have heard of everyone here would say it was an awesome movie.

Duuude, I was totally going to say that.

I was hoping Chris Gans would return to do the 2nd movie because not only is he a fan of the games and actually played through them, but also b/c he stated that he really wasn't pleased with the first one he did..  he felt that there was too much of trying to explain everything.  Which is true I guess.. in the games I recall there being hardly any story.. just a lot of symbolism.  Unfortunately I found out he will not be doing the 2nd movie b/c he's too busy doing another vg movie.. Onimusha....  yeh I know..  BUT,  gotta give him credit for saying that if he couldn't do the 2nd one, he would do everything in his power to keep it out of Hollywood and make sure it remains European.. and he did stay true to that.

Roger Avary who penned the first has been confirmed for the next.  Weird though because he's been sentenced to a year in prison but they're still going with him..  is he going to write the script in jail..?  Interesting..

..idk man, after hearing some of the latest rumors and looking into it..
it's not looking good

you're the first guy I hear that liked the flick. To each is own or course but personally, they lost me with the harrier part. You know, these non-tech humans find 1000 year old harrier jet, learn how to fly them with simulators and then fly these complex, again 1 thousand year old aircraft, and even get the lingp right. The moment one of them said "I'm right on his tail", my buddy and I cracked up out loud in the theatre, and we're the only two dudes laughing.  Oops!

Anyway, for me it's one of those "it's so bad, it's good" flicks.  I've asked this question a dozen times, maybe someone can bring me closer and finally answer it:  The book is supposed to be this fantastic sci-fi, so is the entire Harrier sequence in the book?   No one who loved the book seems to recall any specifics to this.

On topic: Mortal Kombay kicked ass, it managed to stay true to the game and the Johnny Cage character was hiliarious.

LOL, not at all, if you read most of my movie related posts, you'll see I have an appreciation for just movie entertainment, not everything has to be art.  But there's a reason why Battlefield Earth is often regarded as one of the worst big budget flicks of the past 20 years and although I can park my brain like the best of them, this one seems to require a need to park my eyes/ears too :).
