Anyone have thoughts on iPad for jukebox?
« on: April 07, 2010, 09:14:35 am »
As the title says, I was tossing around the idea that an iPad has the potential to be a pretty slick touchscreen jukebox. anyone have any thoughts or know if there might be any jukebox type software as an APP out there?

Also, I haven't built a jukebox yet, so what is the cost to have a PC and buy a touchscreen VS. the $499 for it all built in an iPad?

EDIT: Apparently there are a LOT of jukebox apps out there already, some even have the old retro jukebox look which is cool. Of course it would also play Pandora, have the internet and a ton of other apps as a bonus.

You should be able to pick up a touchscreen for, say, $50 - $100.  Decent jukebox software should run from $0 to about $60.

You can figure out your PC cost.  Most people have old ones kickin' around that would work.  Also, they usually don't calculate that cost into the equation.   ;)

Yeah, but when it is all said and done I wonder if the iPad would be a more viable option? They have jukebox apps starting at 99 cents. Plus it is so sleek and does so much out of the box.

The main thing is if you want to build one to look like an actual juke box or you just want to have the functionality.

There are tons of jukebox software programs out there so if yuo jsut want a monitor sitting on top of a desk and you can call it a juke box, then great.  It's designing the whole cabinet that can get interesting and costly.  Lots of glowing lights and stuff...

Well, it seems lots of people build the touch screen jukeboxes... so rather than have a PC, plus buy a touch screen monitor it seems better to just use the iPad which has everything you need in one small package.

A few issues you might hit are storage and compatibility with common file types. You will also not be able to hook up extra buttons should you require them. You will probably need a computer as well as the ipad to get the media you want onto it and sorted in a way you like unless you are exclusively using the app store. Then there is customisation of the jukebox software itself, i doubt this is easy if even possible using jukesofware on the ipad.
