Dust washers
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:25:08 am »
I have a pair of LS-30 joysticks in my CP.  Unfortunately, they did not come with dust washers.  I'm about to order some parts from Lizard Lick and wanted to get some washers that would fit.  Anyone know if any of the washers they sell are good for a 12mm shaft diameter?

Looking at the springs (http://www.lizardlick.com/images/springs.jpg), I'm thinking that the LS-32 or JWL would be big enough.  There are some one sale that could be modded, but I don't know if the plastic will grind nicely or if it will just look ugly.  I don't mind buying a couple extra to save on shipping for a reorder...I just don't want to have tons of extra stuff sitting around doing nothing!

Does anyone know the shaft diameter on the LS-32 and/or JWL sticks?  If I knew that, I'd probably be golden!   :afro:

I'm going to need one for my L-30; it's cracked. Please post what you find!

Cheers DashRender, I don't sell them at the moment but I may be able to.

LS-32 shaft diameter is 9.8mm - washer bore diameter is around 10.3mm

JLF/JLW/U360 shaft diameter is 8.95mm - washer bore is 9.5mm

As you can see both will be too small for your LS-30s.

I am making some more JLF/JLW/U360 washers this week along with some LS-32's.

I may make some LS-30s too. Is the LS-30s shaft cover tapered? I have a LS-33 here which is tapered, aound 12mm at the joystick base and 10mm at the ball end.

Scratch that, the LS-30 is the rotary type. I have one in my parts bin I can go measure.

You wanted yellow didn't you Havok?

What diameter would you like them?

Those shaft diameters are very useful!  The ones that Lizard Lick has are all too small ID obviously.  But, the thing that's most important is that some have a ridge on the inside that would make modding more difficult.

When you cut your dust washers, how much extra do you leave on the ID for movement?  I would think ~1mm is sufficient.

Oh, and one more thing.  What do you do to keep these from scratching the top surface of the CP?  I used Lexan (I think) which does scratch/scuff when I use the mouse on it.  Does backing the washer with a bit of felt help or just make it not work?  I can't install these under the CP at this point, so...

The clearence size between the shaft and the washer depends upon the throw of the stick, the installation depth of the joystick and the thickness of the washer. The further away from the CP top that the joystick is, the greater the horizontal travel and hence the larger the clearence needs to be.

I make my washers so that there is just enough clearence so that the washer does not tilt when the shaft is at its maximum throw.

For the JLF/JLW/U360 washers I leave 0.5mm clearance for top/close mounted joysticks.

I havent made the LS-32 templates for the washers as yet but I imagine they will be similar.

For the LS-30's I'll have to take a LS-30 into work tomorrow and find out the optimum diameter.

Lexan (polycarbonate) will scratch more readily than acrylic which is what my washers are made from. If you are concerned about your CP scratching you could back them with felt or even something with a lower profile like a sticky paper label.

Yes - yellow would be great. I'll have to measure the stock one I have and I'll let you know the diameter.

Please post your dimensions when you figure it out.  I'm thinking I'll just order a couple from Lizard Lick for now since it's less than $1, but if yours turn out like the other ones on your site, I'll probably be making an upgrade.  Heck, I don't have anything now, so any dust washer is currently an upgrade!

I was just looking for some other dimensions and found this information on the LS-30.

http://www.kowal.itcom.pl/ArcadeParts_pliki/joySLS30SRJ.htm

It says that the stick ONLY came with black dust washers.  I thought that most sticks came with a washer that matched the top color.  Interesting...

Oh, this site also has a TON of info on different joysticks.  It might be good to link this into the wiki IMO.

Yeah there is some good info on Kowals site, he really does know his stuff.

It seems strange that you are so suprised that the LS-30s only come with a black washer. I think there is only one joystick (T-Stick) out of all of the ones I have bought that had a coloured washer.

I thought all the HAPP sticks used washers that matched their ball tops?  I'm just going by pictures, so I guess that was a bad assumption.   :dunno

I didn't know Kowal was a member.  I found his site linked through google.  I used the google translator to go from Polish to English since me no speakie Polish.   :)

I have never had any Happs so I wasn't sure. I did a image search and the first couple of pages came back with black washers even on coloured bat tops.

After digging through a few more pages I have seen some coloured ones so you must be able to get Happ ones, my bad  :-[   :)

I have only played with the LS-30's, but I have a few other CP's sitting around (Nintendo, etc).  I think all of those sticks were black, so I really don't know what anything should be other than pictures of CP's people post here.   :laugh2:

In case anyone has LS-30's and wants a round restrictor gate instead of the stock square one, I can confirm that one from the LS-32 WILL work.  I just got mine from Lizard Lick yesterday.  I haven't used the stick yet, but the parts physically look identical (except for a set of extra nubbies that may require dremeling).  I can't comment on performance yet, but, when I do, I'll post my opinion.

I have blue Happ Competition sticks and they both came with black dust washers.  I looked on the happ site but can't find reference to any colored ones.   I have my dust washers mounted under my (metal) control panel. P1 seems to jam sometimes and prevent the stick from centering properly.
It looks like I've got the washer installed upside down, but I've not had time to rip it apart yet.

The IL Competition sticks have matching dustwashers, but not the Happs.

Yup, looks like Happ are black only and iL are matching.
