Space Wars - single player possible?
« on: April 04, 2010, 07:43:31 pm »
I'm looking for a way to play Space Wars in a single player mode.  Space Wars was probably the first video game that I ever played, so it has a special nostalgia for me.  But, I'd like to be able to get in a game or two even when I don't have a friend over to play.  The original was two player only and I seem to remember have the same problem back in the arcade, sometimes.  ;)

Searching around, the most promising thing I've seen so far is that the Vectrex system version of Space Wars had a single player mode.  I'm thinking of trying to set up Vectrex under the MESS emulator to try it out.  I've always liked the vector games, so I'll probably try to get Vectrex emulated one way or another.

So:

Any other options for a single player Space Wars?
Anybody know if the Vectrex version of Space Wars single player mode is any good?
And finally: Is MESS the best way to go for Vectrex emulation?

Thanks,

Sammy

I use Mess for Vectrex and tried Space Wars on it and It's not bad for using a joystick

Could have sworn that last time I played Space Wars (the real thing... and we're not talking 30 years ago... I'm talking 2 years ago) it had single player mode.
NO MORE!!

Well, the last time I played the real thing was 30 years ago, so my memory might be off.  ;)

But KLOV lists it as two player only: http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9691

Wiki says the same thing.  And I can't find any single player option in MAME.  Maybe you played some kind of clone?  If so, I'd be interesting in any info you might have.

Edit: Meant to say KLOV says 'two' player only.

I owned one (it was my only cab) for a bunch of years, and can say with some authority that it was a 2-player only game.

There was a nice simulator (done in Delphi, if I recall correctly) floating around a few years ago.  I wonder how hard it would be to add some AI...
