Does anyone know the dimensions of the hole in the trackball cover plate for an atari 4.5 inch trackball?

I have a missile command TB...I was  wondering what purpose does this piece of plexi serve? it seems superfluous?

The ball hole is cut at an angle and keeps the ball inside the unit.
NO MORE!!
