X box 360 Arcade project
« on: March 24, 2010, 09:10:29 am »
Hi Guys,

I am looking into building an arcade machine to use with my xbox 360 mainly for use with Super streetfighter 4.

Is it possible to hack the control pads to make a custom control panel? and if it is what buttons and joysticks  do you recommend to use; Leaf switches, cherry or Sanwa?.

I hear that the madkatz arcade sticks are the best you can get for streetfighter and my aim is to emulate these as best I can.

Many thanks in advance

Yes you can padhack them but unless you have a background in electronics or been in the hobby for a while you might be better off to acquire the padhacking services from HarumaN or else I would keep an eyeout for a pair of Madcatz TE, Round 2 or MvC (all these are the same except for the artwork and appearance) edition fight sticks for < $100 since they just released their new TE "S" stick.

I know Gamestop had the MvC fight stick for $100 a few weeks ago and this is not bad because TE's come with all Sanwa parts which will run you $50-60 to order alone from a place like Lizardlicks.  Stay away from the SE cause all it is good for is the PCB cause the joystick and parts are crap knock offs that will fail.  The nice thing about the madcatz fight sticks is that the wiring harness uses quick disconnects to the buttons and a JLF harness to the stick.  So buy two of these and either integrate it into your cabinet like this:

Or gut them and fit them into your new control panel.  Here are pictures of the different TE sticks and the SE at the very bottom.

First generation TE

Second generate TE aka Round 2

TE MvC edition

SE stick

Good luck with your build.

There you go   HarumaN is the man when it comes to padhacks.  I can't speak from personal experience but I know there have been many people who have used him and will recommend him.  I've only seen pics and from what I can see his work looks and if I ever needed a padhack he would be the first I would contact.

Also to the OP, you might want to consider another PCB I can't say enough good things about which is the Paewang Revolution which works for PS3, PC and 360!  Much each to solder wires to this compared to padhacking an OEM Microsoft 360 controller.  This way your cabinet will be more versatile and be able to support multiple platforms and most important run MAME!

HarumaN, you should check these PCB out because I'm sure you could sell these pre-soldered for people who aren't very good at it and this should be a walk in the park for you.

The guy who did this found a nice connector to solder directly to the board otherwise when I helped my friend do his stick we soldered the wires directly onto the leads.

Here is the wiring for the joystick or use a small quick disconnect on the other side of the connector.  You can also see on the pic above to the very right are the leads for the buttons like Start, Back, Select, and Turbo which presented my friend with some problems but we managed to get it working.

http://www.etokki.com/Joytron%20Paewang%20Revolution%20PCB%20Only

It comes from Korea and came it around $60usd shipped using EMS.  All the guy is doing is ripping the PCB out of the joystick to help save on shipping (~$30 versus $4-5 for the PCB alone) since the buttons and stick are crap anyways.  He told me has has a stock pile of empty cases in his closet  :laugh2:

However for those interested you can easily replace the crap parts above with Sanwa or Seimitsu.

i ordered this one via amazon , coz i ran off stock with the madcatz crapsticks . 32 euro incl. shipping seems fair for a 360, ps3 and pc stick . i have to recheck if the stick is com ground . the buttons are 4 sure. i suppose the pcb is the same .

Thanks for your reply buddy the cabinet you have shown is exactly what I am trying to replicate is this something you have made? I would be having a fixed control panel with the controls integrated rather than having them detachable.
