ETouch not playing most of my M4a tracks?!?!?!?
« on: March 21, 2010, 09:33:41 pm »
Trying out the Demo of the Etouch on my ELO touchscreen.  Had no problem loading up the library of over 4000 songs with no errors, so not sure why it shows all the songs as playable, then doesn't play them through the front end.  The Etouch is supposed to play the M4a format (native Itunes format) which the majority of my library is in,,,,frustrating.....any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!~

E-Touch uses Windows Media Player as its music player, its embedded into the program. So if WMP will play M4A files, then it should play them in E-touch. Maybe there is a M4A add-on for WMP? I'm not an itunes user nor have I ever used it, so my knowledge is slim to none. I use a converter called Easy CD-DA Extractor http://www.poikosoft.com/

I'll do some research........

Upon further Review.........

Looks like the M4A files are copy protected files that can only be played in iTunes.

But your in luck as there are many converters out there. Use the one I suggested in the link above. It works for me! Put a couple hundred tunes in there everynight before bed and they should be done by morning!

As for E-Touch finding M4A files in the config, it will find anything in the search mask that you tell it too. It will even find .txt files if you put it in there.

btw, are you a registered member over at www.freeboxjukebox.com ? Your questions will get answered a whole lot quicker over there!

m4a tunes is NOT drm protected (but watermarked) and I have played brought songs in XmPlay, winamp as well fmod (i use FMOD for my software and not WMP) just after a Windows reinstall still not have sign of iTunes at all (which I use due iPhone).

But M4P files is drm protected (older songs) and can only play throught iTunes. These need to been freed from DRM before playing in other software.

Its could been some codec issues as well...

You need to check they play in windows media player. If they do not then you will need to install a codec pack to support that playback. I normally use the K-Lite codec pack to install the codecs required to play most formats and IIRC this will also allow M4A to play.

As Space Fractal says M4A files are fine it's the M4P files that require ITunes to play due to the DRM. Thank god the likes of amazon have switched to MP3 files without DRM, it's just more portable and more compatible in terms of players availble.

Just to been noticed, all iTunes tunes is today drm free (have been over years or mightbeen two) and most songs can been upgraded to drm free. Hence why I now use iTunes today and is one of the few service in Denmark.

The downside its can cost since that it cost some fee per song, but you do get them in double quality (they are today 256kbit), so you need to redownload them all.

Even without the DRM they are not as compatible in terms of device playback as MP3's are, which is why i tend to steer clear of them. My phone will not play them for instance (yes i am one of the few without an iphone.. sigh!).
