U360's keep disconnecting via USB
« on: March 21, 2010, 12:58:50 am »
I just recently re-did my cabinet that I built 5 years ago.  In doing so I built a new control panel and added 2 Mechanical Rotary Joys that work great when playing Ikari Warriors.

However, my 2 U360's seem to be disconnecting and re-connecting continually.  I keep hearing the *ding* when Windows 7 drops a USB device and another *ding* when re-attached.  I opened my device control panel and noticed that the U360s keep getting dropped and re-attached and is is continually happening on my new control panel.  I have them hooked up to a 7 port powered USB hub along with the Ultimarc Mechanical Rotary Interface and a Turbo Twist 2 spinner.

I was thinking that the USB hub that I am using was causing the problem, but plugging the U360's directly into my PC causes them to do the same thing.  Is this a Windows 7 x64 issue, possible power consumption issue with the USB ports, or is it possible that my U360s are dying? :(  The Rotary Interface and Turbo Twist 2 seem to be working fine when plugged into the USB hub.

I'm going out tomorrow and going to pick up a better USB hub and hoping that clears up this issue, but any other suggestions?

I'm running Win 7 64 bit with 2 U360s without a problem.
If your problem started happening to both U360s the same time, I don't think it is a problem with the joystick.
If your problem happens directly connected or with a powered hub, then I don't think it is a simple power problem - although it could be a power surge issue from another device.

I can only guess that one of your other USB devices is causing problems and resetting the USB somehow. I would unplug every USB device except one or both of the U360s to see if it still occurs.

Hi,

Did you ever determine the root cause of your problem?

I also experience the same connect/disconnect problem when I plug my U360s in via a 4-port USB hub that I got from Ultimarc when I bought them. If I plug them in directly (one USB cable each directly to the computer), they work fine, but if I try to use the hub it connects/disconnects continuously, even with just one of them connected.

I'm thinking it might be the total USB cable length, so I'm going to try to find a very short cable to connect from the u360 to the hub to see if that works.

Regards,
  Ken

I was having a simular issue my system on win 64.  The ledwiz kept not being detected I finally unplugged the usb that I was using for readyboot & moved the keyboard & mouse to the ps2.  It was a power consumption issue
I carry both ultimarc & happ items, all brand new & I ship from the united states. My online store is ARCADEEMULATOR.NET, pm if I can help in anyway.

2 U360's seem to be disconnecting and re-connecting continually.  I keep hearing the *ding* when Windows 7 drops a USB device and another *ding* when re-attached.

I had this same exact issue but on XP, For me it was a power issue and I was using the Vantec hub from Ultimarc, but when mine came it didn't have the power cord.

I needed another one to run my Pac Drives so i purchased one from someone else and it came with the power cord and used that one to run my U360's and all has been well, no more disconnects and everything just works. I really think you may have the same issue even though you are plugged into a powered hub with you U360's, I would try disconnecting everything except keyboard and mouse then rebooting then try just 360's in the powered hub and see what happens or try another powered hub if you can find one just to test, also check power connection to hub to make sure it's all the way in. When reconnecting U360's follow Ultimarc's instructions to the letter because of their Id issues when connecting them.   Good Luck

Does anyone happen to know what kind of power adapter would fit the Ultimarc USB hub, in terms of wattage/amps, etc.? It would be nice if I could use the hub for it's intended purpose.

Here is a link to it with model#if this is the same one you have, maybe that can help with tracking down a power adapter. I did read somewhere that the hub will work with devices that draw less then 500 miliamps then you need the adapter after that

Thanks for the link!

I contacted Vantec customer support and they say this model is discontinued and they cannot provide power adapters for it.
However, they were nice enough to provide the required specifications for the power adapter...

It is a 5V AC Adaptor minimum of 1.2A and the connector polarity center is positive.
DC plug dimension:
    Outside Diameter: 3 mm
    Inside Diameter: 1 mm

So I'll see if I can find one one that might work. I wonder why Ultimarc doesn't provide the power adapter with the hub?

Regards,
  Ken
