Aimtrak problems
« on: March 18, 2010, 08:26:10 pm »
Just got an Aimtrak. Great product, but I am having issues. Calibration is successful, but it doesn't work inside Mame. Works fine outside, just not in. Can't figure it out. I have Multiple Mice enabled, but the block that says "Lightgun Input" is not selectable. Does it need to be? The trackball in my cab is my system mouse and IT works fine inside Mame, but the Aimtrak does not. Any help would be appreciated.

you have to enable Lightgun in mame.ini. Also set lightgun_device to mouse.

you have to enable Lightgun in mame.ini. Also set lightgun_device to mouse.

Opened the .ini file. Changed the Lightgun input from "0" to "1." Went into the default options and set the lightgun device to "Mouse." The Lightgun under Controllers is now checked, but still darkened. It's unchangeable. Still nothing. Works outside Mame, not inside.

Where is the Lightgun input block you are asking about?

From the tab menu, edit the Player one controls. Scroll up to save some time since lightgun settings are at the end of the list. Set lightgun x and y using your gun, make sure to move the gun only on the correct axis while setting it, or it will register x and y.

I thought this was the section you said was grayed out, but it doesn't actually say Lightgun input anywhere.  I usually disable the dec and inc settings after setting up the correct controller (pressing esc will set to None). I haven't had any problems with gun games, but some driving games act weird because the settings compete with each other. You only need the dec and int when not using the correct controller to fake it.

Let me know if that worked.

The blocked out area is in the "default game options" outside of the game. I am using Mame32. I know about pressing Tab and setting them in the game, but when I do that, I scroll down to X and Y, press enter, and when it goes blank waiting for you do provide an input, I move the gun in the proper direction, but Mame doesn't register it. I can move the mouse and it accepts that, but not the movement of the Aim Trak. Again, if I exit Mame and go back to Windows, the Aim Trak works great. I'll make a video if that will help. I also need to add that the trigger doesn't work inside Mame either. It's not just the crosshairs. I know the trigger works outside Mame because I use it to calibrate the gun.

you have to enable Lightgun in mame.ini. Also set lightgun_device to mouse.
Short answer: No.

Long answer; explanation:

If you have "lightgun" enabled, you can use the lightgun axis and button to redefine keys in MAME. If you don't have lightgun enabled, you can not use the lightgun.

"lightgun_device" is to asing a control device to the MAME lightgun. Internally, this option overrun the control device enable/disabled, enabling it. For Aimtrak, the option must be "lightgun_device lightgun.". This also will change lightgun to 1 ("lightgun=1") when you run a game that uses a MAME lightgun controller.

You don't want lightgun_device mouse, because then you couldn't reload shooting offscreen.

My offscreen reload works just fine with it set to mouse.

To get the trigger to work in MAME, assign the trigger to button 1.

I haven't used MAME32, so I can only suggest what my working settings are in MAME.

Well, I have a new problem now. The whole damn thing quit working. I have to unplug it for several minutes to get it to start working again, then after a few seconds, it stops. I restart the computer, still nothing. After several attempts at plugging and unplugging the cables, it again starts to function but only for a few seconds, then stops again. This is all outside of Mame. I've about had it with this thing.

Now it appears to have died all together. I tried the system on 3 different computers and it doesn't work on any of them. I either received a malfunctioning unit, or something happened to it that I am unaware of. Regardless, thanks for the suggestions and I most likely won't be buying another one.

Email Andy. He will take care of it. I am pretty happy with mine, and although it took a few tries to get it calibrated, it works well.
