Ultimarc SpinTrak mouse connectors?
« on: March 18, 2010, 08:17:30 am »
I picked up an Ultimarc SpinTrak (http://ultimarc.com/SpinTrak.html) and I was planning to use the USB harness for my mouse buttons (here is a picture from their web site: http://ultimarc.com/images/spintrak_usb.jpg).

So, looking at the connector (a close up http://ultimarc.com/images/spinner_buttons.jpg), I have 3 pins for the 2 mouse buttons.  No problem.  Andy at Ultimarc was nice enough to send me some wires and connectors to hook up one of the mouse buttons.  But I really wanted to hook up both buttons.

So, here is my question.  Does anyone know where to get the connector to plug into the square pin on the SpinTrak board?  I no longer have a wire wrap tool, and I don't really trust my soldering skills.  The pin looks like a the same pins you would find on a PC motherboard to connect to the case (ie power, speaker, HD light, etc), but I have no idea what the part would be called (PC HD light connector?).  I have tried RadioShack, no luck there.

I will try to get a picture of the cable Andy sent me later if that would help.

Thanks!

- Brian

To answer your question about where to get the pins,
I sourced those pins (and connectors) for the UHID and U360 0.1" headers from Action-Electronics.com in California.
Search for "Molex KK pins".
They are $2.50 per 100 for the pins.  (Shipping may be a deal breaker unless you're order more stuff.  otherwise, just order a few pins from ebay, or digikey).

However, I personally dislike those connectors.
I would recommend replacing all that with 0.062" or 0.093" molex connectors.
(also available from Action-Electronics.com and DigiKey)

Well, I only needed 1 pin.  I really didn't want to buy a pack of 50 (which was the best I could find).

So, I stopped at RadioShack and picked up a D-Sub Connector.  Looks like a female serial port.

If I take the pins themselves, they are a bit too large (and round).  But they are slit down the side, and I can compress them a little bit.  Success.  Nice snug fit.

Make sense?
