How to cut cp overlay from mamemarquees?
« on: March 15, 2010, 01:24:11 pm »
Anyone have suggestions for cutting the holes for buttons etc? I finally have my cp board and plexi overlay and just need to cut the cp graphic accordingly. I ws thinking of using a spade drill bit for this. Not sure how best to cut the 3" hole for the trackball. Xacto knife? Any tips to help me avoid ruining my cp overlay will be greatly appreciated!

I would use an X-Acto knife to cut the overlay.  It's just a big decal.

I agree.  For button holes, you can cut a small X in the hole itself and then fold the overlay into the hole itself.  The button will fit snugly and you won't run the risk of doing any damage to the overlay.

That's what I do - comes out nice and clean looking. Just make sure to use a nice sharp blade.

Thank for the tips guys! I love this site.  Same technique for the 3" trackball hole as well? From what I read the ultimarc trackball is pretty snug. I might need to enlarge the hole ever so slightly with a file I guess.

I cut my control panel overlay with an exactoknife once it was applied on my control panel.  I just felt by hand for the opening and the punched through the middle and cut my blade towards the outside edge and then just used it as a guide.

With the trackball you're going to want to install the overlay first... then use an exacto knife to cut out the hole using the hole in the wood/metal control panel as a guide.
