Spray guns
« on: March 14, 2010, 04:01:57 pm »
Was thinking about buying a spray gun. I have 2 compressors and air lines and was thinking about a cheap one off ebay for 15-20 quid! They worth it ? Anyone recommend a good one or what I should look out for ?

Also, if i get one how do i use it! Presume I need to thin the paint down, but how thin etc ? Can you spray on thick ? need more coats because its sprayed on ?

I have no idea about any of this so any help would be great thanks!

(was looking at this one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-BODYSHOP-TOOL-HIGH-PRESSURE-AIR-PAINT-SPRAY-GUN-A59_W0QQitemZ230353431619QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Air_Tools_and_Compressors?hash=item35a2226c43#ht_2124wt_939 )

Hey Nacimroc, I use a gravity fed gun (cup is on top of gun) the one you linked to is a siphon fed (cup is below).  Either type is fine, advantages to both types.  Do some research on google to find a decent brand.  I'm a woodworker so I use conversion varnish as a finish, same stuff you find on kitchen cabinets.  You can get it pre-cat or post-cat (pre is catalyzed before you buy it, you catalyze post yourself).  You can buy CV paint, shoot 2-3 coats and you're done, or CV primer where you shoot 2 coats of primer and clear coat over.
Look for a gun that is definitely HVLP (high pressure low volume) I think that gun you linked to is one.  I usually shoot at about 30-40 PSI. You'll have to play around with the guns knobs to adjust fan spray, air pressure, and fluid pressure to find the best spray.  Each finish is different as far as coats and how thick, just read the label on the back to figure that part out.  Safe bet is 3 coats like I talked about earlier.  You can thin finishes with their corresponding thinners.  Lacquer base (including CV) use lacquer thinner.  Latex use water if water base of course, mineral spirits for oil I think, Etc...Each finish has a certain viscosity, so each needs a certain needle, air cap, nozzle combo.  Latex is really thick so you need a huge tip...maybe a 2mm or so.  Conversion varnish can be shot with a 1mm tip but bigger would be better.
Just decide what type of finish you will use and work on the gun from there. Hope this helped

p.s. I had a huge novel written for you but my computer fritzed and i lost the reply before i posted so this is much smaller : ) sorry
