So.. thought I'd check out the boards while at the airport and I ran across this interesting thread.
At least to me. It makes sense to not call people who are descendants of Indigenous people "Indian" ... I think for me part of it is to respect those people and what they wish to be called, but most of it is also because they were called "Indian" because someone a looooooooong time ago mistakenly thought they were in the country of India. This was a pretty big mistake, so to reproduce this mistake and insist on using this term based on a mistake makes no sense.
And someone said something about wanting to be called European American... In many research papers that I've read "White" people are referred to as European Heritage, European American, Caucasoid, Caucasian, and White. So really, people of color aren't the only ones that have multiple names =) And yes, saying "injun" is wrong.. just as saying "cracker" and "whitey" are as well.
I sort of do agree with the guy that I'd prefer people just say what they think, that way I'd know who to stay away from and who I should be weary of. I think, at least in California, people are so worried about being politically correct that you actually can't tell how people really feel (which can sometimes be more dangerous). Although, at the same time I would I wouldn't want to be surrounded by a racist environment. However, I have met people who grew up in racist households and have challenged the ideas (when they were older) and have actually been able to change some of the ideas their parents have had about women or people of color.. so you can't just judge people base on that alone.
Anyways.. Yeah I remember playing kkk mario once. It was when I had just found out about emulation and I was showing my friend ( lady college friend0 how cool it was to play nes on the comp. Yeah, that was embarrassing once I realized what the pointy hats and the characters were suppose to represent.
well there was always the classic 2600 "Custer's Revenge" apparently one of the worst games of all time, having sex with a tied up indian woman...sorry, native american woman...sorry, first nations person................
i don't know what the hell to call people anymore
