IPAC USB problem?
« on: July 27, 2003, 08:36:25 pm »
I'm not sure if this is a problem with USB, Windows XP, IPAC or Game Launcher or a combination of these, so I'll explain here.

My setup is Windows XP, 2Gz CPU, 512MB ram, IPAC4 and OptiPAC both hooked up via USB.

I use Game Launcher for my Front End of MAME. When I have background music running in the launcher, the navigation menu periodically hesitates, meaning that the input doesn't register for about 5 seconds, then it springs back to life. This happens about every 15-30 seconds, and it doesn't seem to matter whether I'm using joysticks (IPAC) or the mouse (OptiPAC) to navigate.

If I disable the background music in Game Launcher, the problem goes away. Also, if I use a NON-USB keyboard or mouse, the problem also goes away (with bg music running.). Any ideas?

TIA
Monte

What sound card do you have?  If it's an on-board card, or has bad/old drivers, it might be conflicting with the USB hardware/driver.

Yes it could be a driver issue. You could try going into Control Panel, Device Manager and uninstall (right click) all USB devices and controller. Then reboot and let the drivers re-install and USB devices re-detect.
On the sound card side, recent on-board codec-based sound chips seem to have driver issues sometimes. Might be worth checking for a later driver version.

I bought an Epox motherboard with onboard sound, but the first board I got had a hardware problem (no sound). I got the board replaced and the second board was also defective (only left channel sound). So I gave up, disabled onboard sound altogether and went with a SB 16 PCI card, I'm using the default XP drivers for it.

I'll try the USB driver reinstall.
