I feel really dumb, but which button is #1?
« on: March 09, 2010, 09:32:50 pm »
I've installed all my buttons, mounted the IPAC, and now I'm staring at all the microswitches on the bottom of my control panel and I cant figure out one thing: In the standard layout, what number is each button?

My layout is two rows of three and then two more underneath:
__X_X_X
__X_X_X
_X_X___

Is it just:
__1_2_3
__4_5_6
_7_8___?

Thanks

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Depends on the user.

That's the Capcom 6-button standard, but I go:

456
123
     7

Most people who play my cab for the first time assume the correct button when looking for button one. I don't like reaching across the other buttons for 1-3 button games.

I'll amend my previous statement. MAME sees it how you have it set in your button diagram up there, but with MAME you can change the keys to your liking

Of course, if your cabinet can also play real arcade boards (that use more than 3 action buttons), you'll need to go with the "default" mapping. Most real arcade boards can't change button assignments.
But if you're strictly using a PC in your cabinet, just about any way will work (as long as MAME is set up properly.)

Yeah, that's what I did too (except my 7 is on the opposite side, right hand thumb).  I had to remap all the buttons for Street Fighter style games so that punches would be on the top row and kicks on the bottom, but I like my button #1 right where you show it placed.

When I did that layout, it was because I map the 7th button to button 4, so I have two button 4's. That way, I don't have to worry about the mapping from Neo Geo to Capcom, it works for both. I don't care that the punches and kicks are reversed for Capcom fighters, as I didn't play them much in the arcade to begin with.

So it's actually:

456
123
     4
