B/S/T rules.....
« on: April 06, 2010, 10:24:50 am »
I think we need a new one.
More and more people are posting up ebay and or craigslist ads that ARENT their items. Its annoying.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Yeah, I've done it maybe once or twice, but that's been a while and it was usually me trying to help a friend sell their stuff.

I've noticed an influx of these posts here lately. Most of us search CL and ebay daily already. There's no need for our B/S/T forum to get bogged down with that crap.

There are so many ads for so many locations, it just doesn't make sense to post numerous random ads when it's not even being sold by a community member.

While I don't feel terribly strongly either way, perhaps the craigslist and ebay items from non-members should stay where they are.

I do like seeing tips regarding other deals that can be found (power strips, touch screens, Taco Bell discs, etc.).  I hope these postings don't get lumped into the same category.

Those aren't in B/S/T, so they don't count.

I agree with the majority here. No need for posts about CL or eBay ads, unless they're your own. And even then it would be nice if the threads had a copy of the ad in the thread itself, so it is still viewable after the sale/auction is ended. And it would be really cool if people added the final sale price, so we could use it as a reference in future searches.

my main gripe is I click a post and its ads for craigslist all over the country, now like I said before if it was the sellers ad or even a friend or some really great deal then maybe but, its just random garbage almost all the time

I agree that only the item's you have that are actually yours to sell is worthy of posting in the bst.

making random post of things for sale that you dont own or even know the people who is selling them is plain silly and can lead to getting ripped off easily becuase nobody here know's anything about the seller etc..

however I would be OK with a sticky post in the bst dedicated just for these random looky whats for sale here type post that are not relevant to most.

+1000 (but it wouldn't let me vote 1000 times!!!)

Some of my earliest posts were where I thought I had found great deals and wanted to share them with folks that may be local. That didn't last long because eventually you discover that the majority of deals actually aren't on the usual spots like CL or eBay ... and also realize that anybody who is interested has already seen what you are posting.

Having said that, there are things that new folks are excited to share ... and some new folks may not have seen ... and it would be a shame to dampen their enthusiasm (save that for when they ask "What is the best joystick" or "Should I use an X-Arcade").

A dedicated stickied thread for "NotMine - Found This On eBay/CL" solves the majority of the problems while providing the majority of the benefits.

I've been trying to sort whether or not references to sale items on other boards should be included/excluded. I typically don't post stuff I see for sale on other boards, unless I know someone here was looking for that item and can't remember who it was.

Another sticky doesn't thrill me.  I check the site alot from my phone and about the first two pages of B/S/T are stickies.  I'm not saying there not worthwhile, but I don't see the value in adding this as a stickied thread.

You could have a dedicated section for that stuff.

I'm ok with posts about eBay and Craigslist sales that aren't from the poster, as long as there's a discussion about them (like, "Wow, can you believe they converted this Star Wars cab into a chair?", etc).

It would be nice to exclude this section from the search tool though.  If I'm doing a search for "Tron", chances are I'll get overwhelmed with old ads from this section.

that 1 single spot would take place of pages of things for sale that are nowhere near you that nobody even knows or perhaps things that would never even interest you to begin with.

if your into things like that still then it would all be in one nice big single spot for ya.

Not posting them at all eliminates that problem in the first place.  People that are looking already know to look at Craigslist.  I don't see the point in posting 10-20 of them a day even if it's in its own sub-forum.

I've posted craigslist links on occasion when I see someone giving away free cabs. But after seeing the poll results - guess I'll stop.

Since I feel kinda sorta feel responsible for this discussion

I appreciate the original poster's enthusiasm and can relate to having that same energetic feeling when I started into this hobby several years ago I truly believe that he thought he was being helpful.

The multiple posts from various parts of the country when CL postings were obviously not his, was in my opinion annoying.

KLOV has a subforum with CL and random ebay stuff and I rarely ever visit it.

So that leads to how do you change someones behavior on a free and open forum (or do you even try) without coming across the wrong way, accomplishing this can be difficult, and as you can see by his response back to me, he was offended that I criticized what he was doing, and I am sure he was just trying to be helpful with his postings.

I would say put another sticky so everyone who feels so inclined can post the hot deals and CL ads they find that are not theirs, without cluttering up the members FS posts. This might be the win win you are looking for.

When members do searches on the forums I believe that there is an option so you can unselected the FS thread and omit it from your query.

I think that would eliminate all the extra references for your search.

I tune out the stickies too, I won't even notice they are marked as new since they are mentally blocked..

I thought we had decided a while back against random ebay ads because it was raising the cost of items.

I don't have a problem with the posting of a Craigslist item if someone is trying to give the community a great deal.  For example, someone posted a Donkey Kong for super cheap the other day.

That said, any Craigslist ad posts should follow the BST rule of marking the location in the thread title.  It doesn't do me a bit of good to have posts for games in Cali, for example. I can safely skip over that thread.

A possible addendum to the general rules is that if you're posting an ad that's not yours, mark it as such.  I've noted that most people do.  Maybe even a note that it's a Craigslist listing.
