Are LED pushbuttons worth it?
« on: March 07, 2010, 09:30:33 am »
Hey guys,

I am really debating converting my normal Happs Pushbuttons to the Electric Ice Buttons/RGB Driver/LedWiz/etc.  My question to all who have done it, would you do it again and is it worth the cost?  I guess I'll be doing it so that people can see which buttons to use for games in MAME and of course the extra bling factor.  Also debating about the trackball with RGB driver.  I have a happs 3" installed with blue LED and sure if I'll convert that one or not.  Please no flaming, I'm serious, is it worth the expense and time?

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

I wasn't a fan. I took them out after a month and went back to standard Happs.

What didn't you like about them (where they the Electric Ice ones or different LED pushbuttons)?  Thanks.

I love them.   BUT it does add extra expense, work and software setup to the project.   At the end of the day though, it really adds a "wow" factor to the cabinet and, as you mentioned, it's useful for lighting up the active buttons for a particular game (useful for when I have odd layouts for Defender - which utilizes both players buttons to better emulate the original layout).

Lizard Lick has them. I didn't get clear ones as I only want them to be orange, but I did buy the orange ones and they look and feel great.

I love em for the simple fact that you can set it up to light up just the buttonss you  need for each game and If you have RGB led's you can even light them up the right colors for each game, makes it sooooo much easier to play not getting confused as to which buttons to press

Just a quick comment to anyone considering light up pushbuttons......

After a year long exercise, GroovyGameGear has something that is just days from being stocked.  It's a new design that will be replacing the current versions of Electric ICE  and NovaGem pushbuttons (no more generic IL).  Folks may want to pause a bit until they see if it's something they might be interested in.

I think it is beyond any consideration a matter of taste.
I don't like arcades to look like pinball tables or 1988 stereo (or 2010 chinese karaoke) components.

i have some novagem light up buttons from groovygamegear.  i doubt i'd ever use them for all the buttons on my panel, mainly due to the additional cost and wiring problems.  however i found they are great for basic admin functions.  i used standard happ buttons for most of my panel, but i used two light up buttons, one for pause, and one for Exit.  i got the insert labels for them, which are awesome.  that way people don't too often have to ask me how to pause the game, or exit back to the menu.(a few people still ask)

I did something similar to you.
I labeled the control panel for the UI keys and also color coded those the buttons.
I have 1 buttons that toggles and lights up when the admin keys are in the "shifted" (secondary) function.
I'd consider replacing the P1-P4 buttons with light-able buttons so they can flash when a credit is inserted like on some of the old Atari games.

Like Blanka, I think having all the buttons lit is not desirable.

I'm looking forward to see what GGG will have.
