Joystick sticking?!?
« on: July 26, 2003, 08:00:11 pm »
I just built my cp but sometimes i have probs with the joystick "sticking". Ie when i start a game the character might move right or left, or maybe the character wont move for a bit etc.

Not too sure? Any ideas? Im using t-sticks.

thanks

Have you checked to make sure one of the wires hasn't gotten down around the joystick shaft and is messing up the switches?  Make sure they are tied out of the way.

You mean it moves on its own? That could indicate a short somwhere inside. And if you can't move anywhere that could indicate more than one short. Are your wires insulated well and connected securely? If you're using a barrier strip you may wanna check that the wires aren't crossing over each other. I would also check up around the switches themselves. Watch the switches as you start a game and have problems. Get a screw driver up in there and try to manually close the circuits with the end. It really could be a number of problems so it's hard to say...

It usually only happens at the start of games. After i move it around for 5 seconds or so, it works fine..

How often does it happen? Every time? What do you think it is? Hardware or software?

Why don't you try a different version of MAME?

first thing i thought of (and its just an idea)

you assembled the stick wrong some how (if possible with t-stick)

my other htought is that you connect something to the NC tab instead of NO... *shrug*

just shots in the dark

I still dunno whats going on  ???

In notepad, if i press joystick left, it moves right. Same with up and down. However, it works right in mame (I tried command version and mame32).

every game though, the stick "sticks" for a few seconds before play though..

It's possible that one or more of the cherry switches stick a little.  Perhaps a little gunk got inside of them.  Not sure how you'd clean them though (soaking them in rubbing alcohol for a bit?).  You should be able confirm if this is the problem with a voltmeter or continuity tester.  If the "stickiness" is bad enough, you should be able to see and hear it (the clicks) when manually moving the cherry switch on and off.

Ok im 99% sure i fixed it.

Okay, i think i was attaching the wires to the wrong prongs (I was doing it like a button).. but i changed prongs and it seems ok now.

Lets keep my fingers crossed.
