Question on self calibrating games
« on: March 03, 2010, 06:03:24 pm »
Tinkering with a controller design and trying to figure out which games calibrate controllers within the games themselves (such as Star Wars).  I tried the deluxe search on MAWS and couldn't figure out how to find this info, if I missed an easy search field I apologize.  They key is I'm trying to not use windows calibration, just calibration within the game itself.  If anyone knows off the top of their heads any games besides star wars that fit this category I would appreciate you listing them.

Thanks  :)

I don't think calibration in Windows would help anyway.  If a game is asking for calibration, it's trying to determine what the limits are on analog controls.  So, Windows won't know what it thinks the limits are and, as such, would not help you.

I don't know where a good list would be found, but you can be certain that games with digital only controls will NOT need calibration.  You might try limiting your list by searching for analog sticks.

That's all I got.

Thanks for the quick reply.  My main cabinet should be back together this weekend and I'll start testing games then.  The main ones I was curious on were the star wars series (empire and jedi) along with Roadblasters.

Late in the game, but...

AFAIK, pretty much all Atari Games with analog inputs self (aka auto) calibrated, unless it needed a manual calibration.  I know this include starwars, paperboy, 720, and Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters (eprom) self calibrated.  Hard Drivin, OTOH, had to be manually calibrated.  I don't know about Road Blasters, but I wouldn't be surprised if it self calibrated.  Note that the roadblaster controller was a limited turn spinner (aka "mouse" aka "relative analog"), not a normal POT based wheel (aka "270 wheel" aka "absolute analog").  IOW, no amount of calibrating will make a normal PC wheel work well.  I don't know about other manufacturers self calibrating, either.

FWIW, most USB analog stick & wheel controllers self calibrate on computer startup or device plug in..  Example: u360, gamepad with thumbsticks, flight sticks.  In fact, the u360 suggests not using windows manual calibration, as that cuts off the corners.

Can I ask why you're looking for which games self calibrate?  For a controller to work well, if needs to be calibrated in windows (but self is fine) and in the game.
