trackballs and banged up hands
« on: March 01, 2010, 08:54:33 am »
How far apart should a 3" trackball and a joystick be to prevent most impacts when using the trackball?

Thanks, spec

Right handed or left handed? I'd guess the joystick would be comfortable 5 inches on the left side of the trackball, maybe? Also, don't put joysticks infront of your trackballs. Ever. anyone golfing or bowling will be abusing they joystick and their hands.

It's going to differ between people. Different arm lengths, hand sizes, enthusiasm...

This is going to sound silly, but it works.

If you have your trackball placement already decided, drill only the trackball hole and mount the trackball. Then place some vertical objects-- shampoo bottles, whatever, something that won't smash your fingers when you whack it.  Then whale on your trackball like you're playing Marble Madness and Golden Tee.  It's even better if you've got the trackball hooked up and working in one of those games.

If you knock something over, then that's a bad spot.

My joysticks are no closer than 6 1/2 inches, and they're only on the sides. Between the trackball and the glass I have a single button, then the spinner.  The spinner is short enough to easily clear it, but if you're flinging your hand that far you're likely to bump your hand into the glass anyway.

Another thing that has helped me a lot was an extension at the center of my panel's upper tier, meant for the trackball. The bottom half of the trackball juts out (pics in my sig thread).  If you drew a line horizontally across the trackball, that line would line up with the bottom edge of the rest of the panel.

Measured my x-arcade tankstick recently for another post:

It is 5-3/8" from the center of the ball to the center of the player 2 joystick shaft.
It's about 3-1/4" from the edge of the trackball cutout to the edge of the joystick ball.

In many games of bowling & golf, nobody has ever hit a joystick while using the trackball.

Thanks all for the feedback, BadMouth, yep, it was me who started the other post but got so little feedback, I thought I would just stick to one question per post.

Still, I was expecting more feedback.  I have read posts before warning of the risk to your hand if controls or the monitor bezel glass is too close, but I have not been able to find comment on actual distances.

Hopefully, x-arcade has found a good balance between control panel size and the proximity of its controls to each other.

Thanks again, spec
