Key-Wiz help (unknown device)...
« on: February 26, 2010, 04:48:59 am »
Well everything under the hood works great except I can't seem to get the Key-Wiz to function.  I have the Key-Wiz ST and because I do not have a PS/2 plug-in on my PC I have it running through a PS/2 to USB converter.  I have a hunch this is the problem but I wanted some feedback.  Since it is registering as a USB device is the PC looking for a driver?  Is there a way to run the Key-Wiz with the converter or do I need to go out and purchase a PS/2 hook up?  As of right now the Key-Wiz comes up as "unknown device".  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Alan

BTW Same issue you XP and 7...

It is probably your adapter that is the problem as noted below:

Question: My cheap ps/2-USB green or purple adapter is not auto-detected by Windows plug and play and I can’t get it to work. Where can I download the drivers?

Answer: The vast majority of commonly available ps2 to USB converters are simple passive ADAPTERS that simply change the plug shape to match the outlet. These ADAPTERS only function to connect the ps/2 wires to the approximate USB wires. Simple ps/2 to USB adapters do not use specific software drivers.

In general, most users having trouble connecting their keyboard to newer computers are looking for a ps/2 to USB signal CONVERTER. These devices use an integrated circuit (pre-programmed chip) to actively translate the ps/2 keyboard signal and convert it into a USB keyboard signal.

This allows the vintage ps/2 keyboard to be automatically recognized by the operating system as if it were a standard, modern USB keyboard. A well-designed active ps/2 to USB converter will use the built-in operating system drivers for a USB keyboard (for example in Microsoft Windows XP, kbdclass.sys and kbdhid.sys).

Thanks for the info!!  That was the confirmation I needed to toss my little $2 adapter.  What's another $20 for this cab after spending so much heh.  Off to Best Buy!

Cheers

Well that fixed it :).  It now functions as a keyboard...  However, I can not get Key-Wiz Loader3 to work.  On my XP machine it just hangs on the "Attempting to connect" message and never responds.  On my Win 7 machine it makes it to the "Connection Failed" message.  BLAH!!!  Since it's a ST there is no switch for Key-Wiz/Keyboard so nothing in the documentation helps me.  LOL sorry this is the last cog for my cab to function 100%.  I am sure you can understand my impatience!

Thanks,
Alan

There are two other problems you might run into when using a PS/2 to USB converter unfortunately.

There will likely be a limit of simultaneously pressed keys, and also all held-down keys might cancel every 2-3 seconds which means its impossible to play most games.
