Aim-Trak issue
« on: February 25, 2010, 08:18:14 pm »
I'm having an issue calibrating the Aim Trak.  When I first got the system I did some quick checks and it worked great.  I installed it in an MP5 Airsoft gun and put the led emitters behind my cabinet glass.  The gun tracks correctly and all games are setup and working correctly.  My issue is that I can't change the calibration from the default.  When I hold in button 3 on the gun the calibration starts as scheduled and the mouse moves to the upper left.  I pull the trigger and it moves to the upper right and then down to left of center at the bottom.  Each time I pull the trigger it just keeps moving to the next "station" of the calibration.  It never actually calibrates. I usually end up unplugging it and then plugging it back in.  Clicking the "calibrate" button in the software results in the same thing.  Like I said, it tracks correctly and is just off a little bit.  The big issue is when someone else wants to play.  I'm 6'4" so my wife can't look through the sights.  Also periodically the gun will just lock up. (not cool when you are in the middle of a great Area 51 game).   Firmware is 1.3   Any ideas are appreciated.

I am having the exact same issue, except the tracking is completely off making it unusable

I had the same problem with my first unit, after attempting to upgrade the firmware in Windows 7.  After a while it stopped working completely.  Andy and I assumed it was a bad unit and the replacement worked fine even after the upgrade (this time in Win XP.)

Well last night I tried to update the firmware.  That didn't fix it and now it's not even close to being accurate

Well as usual, Andy was right.  I needed to stand farther back for calibration.  Apparently it functions fine much closer than the distance that is needed for calibration.  If I stand back with 3.5 - 4 feet between the tip of the gun and the screen it will calibrate.  I'm not sure If I can get closer if I re angle my leds or not.  I may try that at some point, but right now I don't feel like taking things apart to get the glass off.   SO the moral of the story is you may need to stand even farther back to get the calibration to take.

This could be either a LED positioning issue or the PCB is not aligned with the axis of the gun.

Its possible to tell by looking at the Y readout in the config utility after clicking on "read data".

If you move the gun to the bottom of screen, you can see the reading decrease. if it is getting to 10 or below before you reach the bottom of the screen, then its a problem with PCB alignment or too close.

If it is well above 10 but then suddenly goes to blanks, then its losing the LED before going out of physical range, so the LEDs are blocked or not angled down enough.

Also, the utility will display an error message if calibration fails.
