Lubbock but not San Antonio?  Metallica and AC/DC sold out here in about 10 seconds.

Nothing in Lubbock but a campus full of boneheads and tumbleweeds.

 :dunno
I've never understood that.  Perhaps they think that if the go to a smaller city that they will draw people in from larger cities all around it.   :dunno

Yeah, off the top of my head I'd say that they if they're so big they can fill the venue regardless (cos people will come in from out of town) they do it because they don't have to share nearly as much of the profit cos the venue is so much less expensive.

I see that part of the 'Rust in Piece' 20th anniversary tour is with Slayer as well!!!  :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

As for Mega-Dave sharing the same stage as Metallica, I dont think that will happen but anything is possible. :dunno

From what I just read locally, Megadeth - Slayer will have Testament & Exodus alternate the triple bill!

I need to get some tix!

Marty & Menza returning would be Heaven.  However, probably will never
happen.

United Abominations was actually Really good.  If you have not heard it,
I highly suggest it.  Much better than the just released album Imop.

Chris Broadrick, the new MD guitarist... Hes Excellent in playing the
old tunes.  He really captures the nuances note for note, sound for sound.
However... he does not seem to have his Own creativity.  Hes like a robot
guitarist.  heh   Makes for a great Tour man, but not so hot album work.

New drummer is Ok too.  Plays decent enough... but again,  same
as the chris... He seems to be more of a player, than a creator... and
thus new stuff is kinda lifeless and boring.

Glen Drover was the Guitarist on United Abominations, and the stuff on
it was decent.  Not Marty, but still enjoyable.  Unfortunately, he was
horrible on Tour.  He kept butchering the solos.

The 4hr drive to PA is going to be a PITA... but it should be worth it.

I just cant believe that MD isnt selling to larger arenas in the states.
Metallica sucks since black (and that wasnt that good either), and I wont
support them with a single penny anymore.  Im also surprised at the
fans who continue to buy their Crappy albums. Nothing they have done
past black would get played at local gigs if they didnt have the Name
and decent past songs behind them. (all of which dont even hold up
to an album like Countdown to Extinction or RIP)

He's in the east coast version of TSO.  They have an east and a west coast TSO for touring every year.  We've seen the east coast touring group the last 3 years... Alex can still shred!

HA!  I just looked at the west coast performers and Jeff Scott Soto (from Yngwie fame) is singing for them.

Some people hate on Justice because of One (and everything that goes with it -- videos, awards, airplay, etc), but it's my favorite Metallica album. I don't consider anything after it to be worth much, though Garage Inc is great (go figure, an album of covers). Gotta say, the black album looks better and better with each new release. The worse they are, the better that one sounds (though I still don't care for it).

I agree.  Justice was my Fav. too.

But over the years, my taste has changed.  Maybe cause Im not an angry teen
anymore  heh.   I tend to listen to more 'newage' these days than metal.  However,
I still love MD, play them often.  Its very rare that I can listen to even the old Metallica
anymore.

Maybe its cause Metallica's old stuff is kinda 'ugly' sounding.  Where as MD is hard & heavy,
but more pleasing to the ears / soul.

Im sure a lot of it has to do with Hammet.  His solos might 'fit', but they are not
really all that pleasing compared to Martys upbeat & smooth sounding riffs.

Dave has openly stated that he believes people came there to hear them play music, and
not to listen to him/bands talk.

I think that may be true of someone who wasnt a MD fan, but I believe a lot of
people wouldnt mind to hear Dave chatter for a while.  Problem is... those who attend
who dont know MD might start acting up when music isnt playing.  (Ive seen it
happen with the other bands, when a lead singer was talking about his home life
when they were experiencing amp issues.  Then again, they sucked even when they
were playing...)

Also, Being that the promoters only pay them for a certain small time block... he has
little choice in the matter.  If they extended the play, they work for free... and they may
run into having to pay the security & personnel that run the places money for the extra
time they have to stay there.  All I know is that he has stated that he would love to
do longer sets for his fans... but that the people behind the venues dont agree to it.

Usually MD's extra entertainment is Dave exploding at some lax security guy or
throwing a guitar because the sound system is screwed.  Ive seen both, and more.  heh

Edit: as for the others playing with him... Ive never been a fan of any of those bands.
Really, I dont know who could compare to MD.  Not many bands come anywhere near
their caliber... and they seem to lump deathmetal type bands with MD... which
really, MD isnt anything close to Soundwise.

That's what I love about going to Tool concerts. Barely any banter, and Maynard stays in the shadows. It's completely about the music.

I disagree with you there Xiaou. Im a fan of the old MD stuff like, RIP, and countdown to extinction, but their newer stuff just sounds like they are trying to cram too much stuff into them. Kinda like "hey look we can play guitar really fast, we are still relevent right?" I dunno, Im a rabid Metallica fan so Im also going to disagree that Death Magnetic is crappy. Yeah, granted, Load and Reload werent as good as their other albums, but no band makes flawless albums every time they release a record. Megadeth is a perfect example of that.  ;) There were a few good songs on each record, but over all, that time period in Metallica's history was whack. Then again, look at the rest of music the time those albums came out. Everything sucked at the time. Besides, every album up until black (which is still an awesome album, just listen to the damn lyrics) blows past Countdown or RIP imo. Dave Mustaine even admits that Master is better than most of his albums. The reason why Megadeth doesnt sell as much is because they didnt evolve like Metallica did. And their music just isnt as good. I personally like Death Magnetic. It sure as hell doesnt sound as sloppy and chaotic as St. Anger. That album was a mess. They got their ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- straight and released a new album that kicks ass.

Danny Carey, and he's still their drummer. Seeing him play from 11 rows away was AWESOME.

I wasn't a fan when I first saw them live, but thought they put on a good show. Then one day it just clicked, and a year later (back in June), I went to my second show and it was incredible (better performance this time, as well).

They've gone way more progressive since the stuff you've mentioned. I'm a big prog rock fan, so songs like Lateralus (multiple odd time signatures, including competing signatures within the same section) and Third Eye are right up my alley.

Effin' right there Mikezilla! Death Magnetic is awesome. Sure every Metallica album isn't perfect... want an example? Load, Reload and St. Anger. Metallica was just experimenting and exploring other sounds and such. But that doesn't mean all the songs on the albums sucked. You have to read lyrics and understand some songs. I for one, enjoy listening to Hero Of The Day (Load).

I disagree with you there Xiaou. Im a fan of the old MD stuff like, RIP, and countdown to extinction, but their newer stuff just sounds like they are trying to cram too much stuff into them. Kinda like "hey look we can play guitar really fast, we are still relevent right?"

This depends on what New you are talking about?  As far as Im concerned, I really
liked United Abominations... but was not hot on "Endgame".   UA features guitar riffs
from Glen Drover, which were decent, but of course no comparison to Marty Friedman.
The new stuff on Endgame, by Chris Broaderick.  Chris is a great technical player...
but he seems to have no soul.  The solos are random fast whailing... but no emotional
content... which surely had a negative effect on Endgame development.  Even
the new drummer is too robotic.  Nothing like Menza, not even close.

Before UA, "The System has Failed"  also has some great tracks.

My Favs probably being Countdown & RIP.  They stomp all Metallicas creations Imop.
I used to listen to Metallica all the time, now its a real rarity.  I couldnt care if I ever
heard them again honestly.

Quote
I dunno, Im a rabid Metallica fan so Im also going to disagree that Death Magnetic is crappy. Yeah, granted, Load and Reload werent as good as their other albums, but no band makes flawless albums every time they release a record. Megadeth is a perfect example of that.

DM is crap.  Its more like what you said... Just playing fast with no purpose or meaning.
One of their songs was like 3 songs mixed together in a really poor way.  Its hideous.
And if you want to puke, watch their documentary "Some kind of monster".  In it
you can see Kirk cant even follow a simple guitar riff that James lays down.  And
then watch them argue over their crappy songs about how they shouldnt do this
because it sounds like something from the past.  I lost all respect for them after watching
that.  They simply dont have "it" anymore.  And James, hes the worst.  I cant stand his
new singing style.  He has no range, hes amateur, hes crap.. and so are the lyrics.
He probably would do just fine singing Country Music. ugg

Quote
There were a few good songs on each record, but over all, that time period in Metallica's history was whack. Then again, look at the rest of music the time those albums came out. Everything sucked at the time.

Thats pure fanboy talk.  You simply are not being objective or realistic at all.

Quote
Besides, every album up until black (which is still an awesome album, just listen to the damn lyrics) blows past Countdown or RIP imo.

LOL.  Now I know you are Trolling.   Black is simplistic and boring.  Almost all the songs
sound exactly the same.  The solos are lame.  Its all very generic.  And "Enter Sandman"  Come on.  Its a fricken baby lullaby.   Daves lyrics in countdown stomp all that album...
let alone RIP.  RIP having some of the most complex and incredibly sounding guitar solos
ever layed down.  Nothing Kirk has ever layed down can compare to anything in RIP.
Let alone to Countdowns more limited solos.

Quote
Dave Mustaine even admits that Master is better than most of his albums.

Bleh.  IMOP, Thats a load.  Dave underestimates his own material.  Master, like most of
their older material, just does not hold up over the years.  It gets old.  More
suited to angry youth... and thats about it.  Its too raw & ugly sounding.
The solos just are not as good sounding as Megadeths, which can be played over and
over again without getting tied of them.  More polished, more feeling, not "ugly" sounding
or raw.

Quote
The reason why Megadeth doesnt sell as much is because they didnt evolve like Metallica did.

Its not really true.  It was more to do with Radio Airtime.  Metallica came out with a
"Less Ugly"  sounding album (black), and radio stations decided it was tame enough
to play, and thus attract a wider audience.

Metallica didnt really evolve.  All they did was cut out long complex solos.  Which
worked in their favor, cause Kirks solos were not really that good sounding.  Ohh, and
James learned how to sing, which also wasnt good, because the new style
(as well as the missing riffs) pretty much lost most of the metal fans).

Quote
And their music just isnt as good.

 Bwahahaha.

Quote
I personally like Death Magnetic. It sure as hell doesnt sound as sloppy and chaotic as St. Anger. That album was a mess. They got their ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- straight and released a new album that kicks ass.

The problem with the fanboys, is that they dont want to admit things.  When Metallica
releases an album with Nursery Rhymes, the fanboys will still buy it without even
hearing it first.  Its pretty pathetic actually.

I bought Load, and that was the last time I bought a Metallica CD.  Black was
nowhere near as technical or deep as their previous stuff, and now they sounded
like a country band.  Everything after, was a bad joke.  The stuff they played would have
gotten them Booed off stage if it were not for their name.  It also never would have
gotten them fame that the original material got them.

DM is a nightmare.  Its like a bunch of random guitar parts all stitched together, with
a drum machine backing it.  At least in their early days, the guitar sections actually blended into the song well. They could play entire musical sections, like "Orion", and it was good.  Now?  They are too burnt out to make anything that sounds coherent and good.   Wake up and smell the Failure.  They are not even a dust particle of their former past compositional and playing ability.

It makes you wonder if the real talent "was" some studio musicians and editors.
Either that or they just have drank and drugged their ability right out the window.

Wow, I agree with everything you just said, except I don't like anything after Rust in Peace (which is one of my favorite albums ever made, and, yes, better than anything Metallica ever did).

I mean, there's stuff here and there I'm okay with after RIP, but there isn't an album I point to and say, "I like that album," just certain tracks.

You really think that Countdown is better than Justice, or Master, or RTL? Cmon. There arent nearly as many cool tracks as the other albums I have listed. Foreclosure of a dream? That song is whack. I love me some Ashes in your Mouth, countdown also rocks, but I feel like that album is Megadeth's Black album.

Its funny Xiaou because you label me as the fanboy, but obviously youre the fanboy for Megadeth. You are way more interested in guitar then me, so yeah, maybe the new Megadeth albums have more guitar solos/faster guitar, but I dont really care about that. I mean, I love a good solo, especially when it goes with the song, but I dont know anything about composition, how hard it is to execute, etc.

The ongoing Metallica vs Megadeth debate will go on for ages. Its rather pointless to argue, because I have argued about it so much, Im starting to not really care  :dunno All I know is that I like Metallica better, and if Megadeth announced their retirement, I could hardly care less. Dave Mustaines voice gets really annoying if not taken in small doses. I met the dude at starbucks up in Carlsbad. He seems cool, but he doesnt seem to know he isnt that much of a big deal anymore. I think he is trapped in the 80's.

There are more Metallica fans than Megadeth fans though. Doesnt make em a "better" band, but...

Who sells out everywhere they play?
Who plays bigger arenas?
Who makes more money?
What band makes the covers of all the relevent metal magazines?
How many kids do you see walking around with Metallica shirts vs Megadeth shirts? (Which I find weird, a bunch of punk kids I saw at the mall were all rocking metallica shirts, hot topic must of had a sale or something)

Its just a matter of preference. Dave Mustaine needed Metallica more than they needed him, obviously. Imagine if he would have stayed in?! That would be crazy.
Pictures are overrated anyway.

Ginsu, I dont know how you couldnt like Countdown.  I mean, "Sweating Bullets",
"Ashes in your Mouth", "High Speed Dirt", even "Captive Honor".. all Rock hardcore.
Even the tamer stuff on it is good.   Listen again, read the lyrics along with them, and rate
these from  +A to -F.   The only weak song on this CD is Psychotron... and even that is alright.

Countdown to Extinction

   1. Skin O' My Teeth
   2. Symphony Of Destruction
   3. Architecture Of Aggression
   4. Foreclosure Of A Dream
   5. Sweating Bullets
   6. This Was My Life
   7. Countdown To Extinction
   8. High Speed Dirt
   9. Psychotron
  10. Captive Honour
  11. Ashes In Your Mouth

United Abominations

   1. Sleepwalker
   2. Washington Is Next!
   3. Never Walk Alone
   4. United Abominations
   5. Gears Of War
   6. Blessed Are The Dead
   7. Play For Blood
   8. À Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free)
   9. Amerikhastan
  10. You're Dead
  11. Burnt Ice

(Only songs I dont care for on UA are 8, 11?. The rest are good to Great. Not a fan of the
Overall sound quality however.  Its not as dynamic as any of the previous albums, but that
of course is the record company jacking over the fans with their compression game :(   )

The System Has Failed

   1. Blackmail The Universe
   2. Die Dead Enough
   3. Kick The Chair
   4. The Scorpion
   5. Tears In A Vial
   6. I Know Jack
   7. Back In The Day
   8. Something That I'm Not
   9. Truth Be Told
  10. Of Mice And Men
  11. Shadow Of Deth
  12. My Kingdom

(TSHF isnt as hardcore. Much more melodic. But its a nice switchup. Esp 9,10,5,8 = All Great songs)

 Youthanasia

   1. Reckoning Day
   2. Train Of Consequences
   3. Addicted to Chaos
   4. A Tout Le Monde
   5. Elysian Fields
   6. The Killing Road
   7. Blood Of Heroes
   8. Family Tree
   9. Youthanasia
  10. I Thought I Knew It All
  11. Black Curtains
  12. Victory

 (Y. was a let down coming from C.D.  However, its very listenable. Only song I dont like
is family tree. 2 & 3 are Very good. 1 is good.  The rest are decent)

Cryptic Writings

1 Almost Honest
2 Use The Man
3 Mastermind
4 The Disintegrators
5 I'll Get Even
6 Sin
7 A Secret Place
8 Have Cool, Will Travel
9 She-Wolf
10 Vortex
11 FFF

 (She Wolf ROCKS!  1 & 2 Excellent stuff, 5 & 7  Good. )

Risk

   1. Insomnia
   2. Prince Of Darkness
   3. Enter The Arena
   4. Crush 'Em
   5. Breadline
   6. The Doctor Is Calling
   7. I'll Be There
   8. Wanderlust
   9. Ecstasy
  10. Seven
  11. Time: The Beginning
  12. Time: The End

(Not a big fan of Risk.  I liked Insomnia. But, even tho not my fav, theres some interesting melodic things in there.  A good breakup from the thrash I guess, but honestly, I have not given it a fair
chance yet)

 Others...

 Angry Again - like
99 Ways to Die - Awesome song.

Like I said, there are songs I like, but the album overall doesn't do it for me. Rust in Peace is a difficult album to follow. Nothing they do will ever be as good as that album.

edit: Yeah, "99 Ways to Die" is a great song. I also love "Go to Hell"

You know why? Cause it isnt that great. RIP is by far better, and there are only a handful of songs on Countdown that are really that good.

Well, hell... I personally dont think anyone or anything can really compete with RIP.
Id be curious to know what other Cds you consider anywhere near that?

Odd.  Did you listen to the originals, or the Remasters?  Cause the remasters of just
about all their music Sucks.

Maybe Im a little biased cause CD is where I discovered them..  but Ive been all through
the catalog, and really feel its one of their top cds as far as a complete listen goes.
Maybe its because I know most of the lyrics by heart... and that album has some great lyrics and meaning in it.

That CD pretty much totally turned me off from Metallica.  heh
Also, they managed to EQ Daves voice so much better on that Album.  Most of the
earlier stuff, Daves voice is too mid-rangy for my tastes.  I have to do some custom
EQ shifts when playing the older material.

I've been a Megadeth fan since Peace Sells, so I'm definitely coming at it from a different angle. Countdown is too radio-friendly (per Dave's own desires) and not as complex (guitar player in me coming out here). Marty is one of my favorite guitarists of all time (check out his work with Cacophony, on Jason Becker's solo stuff, and his own solo stuff), so to go from one album where he really got to shine, to the next where he was shoved to the side, it really bugged the hell out of me. The lyrics....eh, I don't even pay attention, but I know Dave writes great lyrics.

Remasters? Bah. They're awful. I own the original releases. Luckily those crappy remasters made mine worth more, though I wouldn't sell them. I HATE.....HATE(!!!!!!) the newer version of Rust in Peace.

I think thats why CD really shines, and to me, is a lot more listenable than many earlier
works, on a regular basis.

Personally, I love Marty... but I just cant get into a cd of him only.  Somehow, it
seems like Guitar on its own becomes a little too overpowering... kinda like too much salt.

Usually a Lead guitarist doesnt seem to have an equally skilled rhythm guitarists...
which kills things right there.  But even so, you get a song like Holy Wars, and a lot
of what makes that song is the lyrics.  Makes the guitar parts much more impactful
and memorable... than if they were on their own.

Quote
Countdown is too radio-friendly

Lets Peruse the songs of CD, and see how Radio Friendly they are:

-----
Skin of My Teeth:  About a Suicidal person, Struggling each day by a thin thread...

"My blood flows through the streets
Deluge from the wounds
Empty jars of sleeping pills
On the dresser in my room"
-----

Architecture Of Aggression - Military Killings

"To eliminate your enemy,
Hit them in their sleep,
And when all is won and lost,
The spoils of wars are yours to keep."

"Great nations built from the bones of the dead
With mud and straw, blood and sweat,
You know your worth when your enemies
Praise your architecture of aggression"

Foreclosure Of A Dream - Mankinds slow destruction of the earth, & itself

Barren land that once filled a need
Are worthless now, dead without a dead
Slipping away from an iron grip
Nature's scales are forced to tip
The heartland cries, loss of all pride
To leave ain't believing, so try and be tried
Insufficient funds, insanity and suicide

Sweating Bullets - Insanity?

"Well, me ... It's nice talking to myself
A credit to dementia
Some day you too will know my pain
And smile its blacktooth grin
If the war inside my head
Won't take a day off I'll be dead
My icy fingers claw your back
Here I come again"

This Was My Life - Corrupt Justice (Internal wrong-doing)
(? lots of possible meanings here)

Now there's motives for the suspect
Now there's nothing left to say
Now there's method to the madness
Now there's society to pay

Countdown to Extinction - Killing of the animals & ultimately ourselves.

"Endangered species, caged in fright
Shot in cold blood, no chance to fight
The stage in set, now pay the price
An ego boost don't think twice
Technology, the battle's unfair
You pull the hammer without a care
Squeeze the trigger that makes you Man
Pseudo-safari, the hunt is canned ...
The hunt is canned"

High Speed Dirt - Suicide by Airplane Jump

Do it if you dare
Leaping from the sky
Hurling through the air
Exhilarating high
See the earth below
Soon to make a crater
Blue sky, black death
I'm off to meet my maker

Psychotron - Terminator killing machines.

Burning inside
Godspeed in glide
Battle plan running
A killing machine
Just downright mean
And forever cunning

Captive Honour- Path to and life in Prison

Inside the big house
His nightmare unfolds
Before he got there
His manpussy was sold
Black, blanket welcome
This taught guy's now a ---smurfette---
Praying for death
It can't be worse than this

Ashes In Your Mouth - The realities of war

And the soldiers liberate them, laying mines along their roads
Sorrow paid for valor is too much to recall
Of the countless corpses piled up along the wailing wall

Melting down all metals, turning plows and sheats to swords
Shun words of the Bible, we need implements of war
Chalklines and red puddles of those who have been slain
Destiny, that crooked schemer, says the dead shall rise again

-------

So, lyrically, its very direct, harsh & provoking. Speaking of Suicides, insanity, war, death & destruction, with pointed fingers at ourselves.  The kind of thing that just does not get
on mainstream media channels easily.

Guitar wise, its not as complex as the past material.  However, there are a lot of
excellent solos and playing, in all the songs.   Very atmospheric, flowing well with the
lyrical meanings and Daves great cynical sneering snarls.   :)
