Hello... new to this forum... need advice on a monitor

Hello,

I'm new to this forum, however, not to cabinet making, MAME and having fun with it.  I own 3 MAME cabinets, 2 upright, 1 cafe for the kids.

The IBM P275 monitor I had in the cafe cabinet blew out.  I need a replacement... but... they are scarce.  I found a Telcovision TE2001 on line, but it looks like a PC/CCTV monitor without a case?  It's $215 for the unit.

At this point... I have no options, no other place to go to get what I need.  Any ideas would help... I'm desperate as I hate to have this cabinet become abandoned because they don't make the parts anymore.

That's just a standard 21" Trinitron monitor. I would check your local Craigslist - you can probably get one for free. Where are you located? If you're close to me, I'll give you a Compaq P1100 Trinitron monitor for free, however I'm not shipping that beast if you're not local...

Really any 21" monitor should do for you, unless the cabinet is extremely tight on space and the IBM monitor is fairly shallow.

Other 21" Trinitron models to considder would be the Dell P1110, HP P1110 or Sony P1110 (Same tube, different shells and badging) or the Dell P1130 as well.

I actually had two Dell P1110's untill recently and they're awesome.  ...Till the heater died on one earlier this week.  Sadly I could only locate a 19" Dell P991 (The 19" Cousin of the P1110) to replace the dead one. BTW, don't get a P991, despite being a Trini, it does't have individual R, G, and B bias and gain adjustments like P1110. |:

I actually have a spare 21" Philips, but when I flip it on it's back, it looses it's colors. I am keeping it for my Berzerk MAME cabinet as I already have the same monitor in it, and it works perfectly.

So I'll look into the Dell's and dump the idea of that other monitor.  It seemed too expensive anyway.  I like having the monitor enclosed, that open chassis stuff is too dangerous around the kids.

Are there any issues with putting these on their backs as this is for a cafe style cabinet.

Being 70lbs and worrying about the weight cracking the back of the ABS shell, I'm not willing to turn my P1110 on it's back to test it for you, sorry.

That's not unusual. Did you power it down, wait, and then repower it while still on its back? Or execute a manual degauss from its menu?  That's all it usually takes.

Tell you what, I did not... but if that works... you will have solved my issue and made a couple a little kids very happy... and one big Daddy (me) as well.

I've got a Sony 21" monitor, I can confirm it works on its back (it's in a cocktail).  I had to degauss it about 2 times to get the colors right.  Also had to move the subwoofer away from the bottom of the monitor.

Glad to see youve got the solution. Personally though i have never made out by purchasing (Jamma Cabinet, Good Monitor, Complete except game board.

most sellers have in fact pulled the game board a long time ago because the monitor was bad.

Your best bet really if you want the total arcade experience, is to buy an empty cabinet with no monitor hat still has the jamma harness and the control panel. then everything is truly open when it comes to selecting things beyond the jpac interface.

at least you arent an initial $200 more into the cabinet initially than you would have been had you just bought it without a monitor. You are much more ahead in other words to buy a complete cabinet without monitor, power supply, etc, for $200 than you would be if you buy a cabinet with a supposed working monitor for more money and it turns out that the 15 year old POS doesnt work.

YOur simplest route is this. Get yourself the basic complete 25" empty cabinet with jamma harness and cp for $200 and then order a Jpac, and a Neotec hybrid monitor from Quarterarcade On ebay instead of hoping to get an old cabinet with a WG from the early 90s that you are hoping will work right.

Good call - geez, I should have thought of that. See what happens when you move to LCD's? I haven't used a CRT (except for my arcade machines, and they are already mounted - never need to touch them) for about 4 years now...
